My legs were approx. 3/4 different pre-op, perfectly even post-op. Absolutely a happy camper, continuing to improve in different areas. I'm learning to get down on the ground and up like normal kids ';-). It is getting much easier to pick stuff up off the ground (which was over ten years ago that I could do that), and can race up and down stairs without the railing. I continue to enjoy the small victories every day!!! Glad to see you are still keeping an eye on me ;-). Guest guest
--Hi, , I have a leg difference of 1/2 " after my re-surf. I don't think everybody does though. I need my other hip done so am hoping they will be evened up a bit. He has put the hip level where it should be. the fact that the other one is worn down could account for this? Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi , Length increase by 1 cm. Prior to resurfacing, my local OS would compare leg lengths with each visit and began asking me if my right hip was starting to bother me. Yep ... he noticed the additional wear on the right hip ... Guest guest
My bad hip/leg was 1/2 to 3/4 inches shorter before Dr. DeSmet did my bhr. I am absolutley even now. At first I continued to limp for a number of months, but, as I understood it, it was a mind/body/muscle memory problem, not a leg length problem. Today is my one year anniversary and without any special attention or exercises, my brain figured out that everything is even. And I can only recall the pain intellectually. Dr. DeSmet was a blessing for me. Guest guest
Yes. The leg length change is caused by the metal capping thicknesses vs. the thickness of bone removed. I don't know the figure off hand but there is an acceptable deviation that does the body will accomodate and not cause walking difficulties. The risk of leg length change in resurfacing is a lot more controlled than with THR i.e more bone removed by THR has to equal the prosthesis length. leg length difference > wondering if people suffer leg length differences in surface > replacements as they do in thrs > thanks > steven > > > > > >
Guest guest
Welcome! I don't recall any families on the clubfoot boards personally having children who have undergone either of these procedures, but most of the children aren't old enough yet (like your son) to be in a position to consider the procedures. However, maybe some of the families have friends/relatives who have undergone similar procedures. Have you been to Dr. Herzenberg's website: http://www.limblengthening.org/ ?? I would suggest that you email Dr. H directly and he might have some patients' families who'd be willing to talk to you about their personal experiences. I would also recommend posting on the yahoo board for adults with clubfoot to see if any of them have had similar procedures or are living with length discrepencies currently. It's http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thefeetclub We're glad to have you on our board! Please keep us posted! Is your son experiencing any problems currently due to the length discrepency? Guest guest
My husband has one leg shorter than the other - about 3/4 inch - due to an accident as a teen that damaged his growth plate. He looked into the leg lenghtening proceedure. The way he understood it is a long and painful process. However, I have also heard recently of a slightly easier process, but I know nothing about it. Perhaps it would be best to get ahold of Dr Herzenberg to find out what exactly he does and the time and pain involved, and also find out about the proceedure that Dr Ponseti suggested. We are looking at a similar possibility after Kai's last bought of casting because now his clubfoot leg is a bit shorter than the other. They are hoping that the growth plated is not dammaged. Let us know what you learn! Angel
Guest guest
Thank you for your suggestions. His foot is starting to turn in and we cannot get the desired 10-15 degrees of dorsiflection. We believe that this regression may be due to Ethan walking on his toe to compensate for the leg length difference, thus tightening up his achilles. My husband worked with a shoe repair place to modify his shoe not only with a lift but raising the toe and right side of the shoe slightly to see if we could reverse these problems. I have also been working with Ethan twice a day to stretch his foot. We are then going to evaluate the results in about a month to see if he needs to be recasted and go back into the bar. We are trying to avoid this as it will be very challenging to get Ethan to go back. I did email Dr. Herzenberg but was a little disappointed as he mostly referred me to his website. I did not get the same sense of genuine caring as I have experienced with Drs. Ponseti and Colburn.
