Guest guest
, The first week or so of brace-wear isn't a walk in the park - but it honestly shouldn't be horrible either. If your child's foot is fully corrected, the amount of time it takes to acclimate to the bar isn't much longer than a week (possibly two in your particularly fussy babies). As for hitting themselves in the head (and your knee, and your shin, and your ankle bone) with the bar - yup, it sure does happen. That's why padding it with something is important. I know in the files section there are pics of ways to pad the bar - Good luck, this will pass before you know it! You'll reach that point when they can't sleep WITHOUT it, now that's a humdinger! Guest guest
Hey ! My son (BL CF, 10 mos. old, DBB 16 hrs) was one of those babies who never cried. When we put his shoes on for the first time, he cried for two days only stopping to sleep when he wore himself out. After that, he started sleeping regularly again and after about three weeks, he didn't protest in the least when we put his shoes on. I promise it will get better! We bought seat belt pads (for older children) at Walmart (one gray and one SpongeBob). They just fit around the metal bar part and the side screw-ends. We had a terrible problem with him hitting himself in the head with his bar and screw-ends--he even had bruises and scratches on his forehead after the first week. Good luck! Guest guest
We use the seatbelt pads as well and purchased ours at Babies R Us - One has a sun on it and the other a moon. The ones at Walmart would be in the " baby stuff " section. Just a word of warning, they don't provide the best of padding - but they do make The Bar look pretty darn cute. I've heard of others using the BMX bike pads (found in the bike section) while others made their own (I'm not that crafty). Guest guest
, My son has done that. He has gotten so much better with it. I am able to keep it on a lot longer now. He is finally getting used to it. I guess it just takes time for them to realize that its not coming off and they have to live with it. _____ From: jellyjanell Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 12:42 AM To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: first days of brace I am new at all of this and the first two days were absolutly horrible I didn't sleep for 23 hours or more! Guest guest
Hi , Sorry you are having a rough go! It DOES get better, really!! The first 48 hours were horrible and it started getting a little easier after that. Part of 's frustration was not knowing how to move her legs at the same time. I worked with her all day moving and bending her knees together. My frustration was getting the shoes back on once we took them off for her bath. She was always so tired and ready to nurse that she would just scream. After about a week, I got my rhythm down and my DH could distract her long enough for me to get them on. It eventually just became part of her bed routine and was no big deal. Yes, got very good at lifting her bar and coming VERY close to knocking herself in the forehead. But she also learned very quickly how to lift those little legs and SLAM them into my shin, ankle, wrist...whatever was nearby. LOL!!! Good luck Marilouise 9/9/03, LCF, cast #2/2nd series Owen and 3/20/99 > I am new at all of this and the first two days were > absolutly horrible I didn't sleep for 23 hours or more! > Does this get better?
