Save yourself a lot of time and trouble, just get a roll of fiberglass casting

material from your local vet and wrap it around the plaster yourself to

reinforce the weak spots. By the time our six weeks post op time was up I had

about four different layers on his legs at various spots because he beat the

snot out of them. Oh- and these started out as reinforced fiberglass casts.....

LOL! Them kids sure can be rough.

cast broke

My daughter pounds her cast on the floor, and I noticed last night

that the heel area of the cast is broken, and the cast is weak

behind the knee (it bends).

Has this ever happened to anyone before? I hope to see the Dr for a

new cast tomorrow.

Yeah, we had this happen - on a friday night at 5pm no less. We went into the

ER at the direction of the on call ortho and they put fiberglass over the

plaster. It held great until Monday. When Dr Ponseti put on the new cast, he

reinforced it alot, but then later decided it needed fiberglass over it

afterall. Of course, he decided this after the office had closed and I had a

flight scheduled for the next morning at 7am. After we landed in Seattle that

afternoon we went straight to Children's Hospital and the cast tech put

fiberglass over the plaster. That held up to 2.5 weeks of walking, beating and

all other varieties of things. i had to patch to toe shelf with plaster that Dr

P had given me 2 days before the cast was to come off.

Thanks for the info re reinforcing the cast w/ fiberglass.

I am quite frustrated w/ my ortho dr. He does not feel it necessary

for to get a new cast until monday (her scheduled appt) and he

never mentioned anything about reinforcing the weak spots.

This is not the first time he has taken the wait and see approach.

Shame on me for allowing this to continue. I will be interested to

see how her foot looks after this cast is removed. It is her first

cast after relapsing from wearing the AFO. I am leaning towards

getting a new dr, at least for my own piece of mind.

If you are not feeling right about your ortho, then it would probably be best

for you to get a second opinion. The 'wait and see " method doesnt seem like a

good idea to me at such a point in correction. Add that with her having used an

AFO before and it sets of bells.

Good luck!

I sent Dr. ponsetti and email. I requested a consultation with

him. I hope to see him next week.

I will keep the group posted.

Thanks, mollie and lcf (4/14/04)
