Guest guest
Jim, Thanks for your concerns. Yes I did speak to Dr Mont last Tuesday. I got off the phone very distraught. He said people from this site called him and told him about my post asking whether or not other hippies have had the same pain I'm having. So he was upset with me and throughout the call he kept quoting phrases from the post. The problem was he quoted people who had responded to my post. He said I had complained about " shin splints " , which I hadn't. That was from Tug's post in answer to mine. So I'm assuming someone gave Dr Mont a copy of my surfacehippy post. He must have had it in front of him and doesn't understand the format on the site so he thought all of the posts after mine where by me. He wasn't real happy to hear from me. Bottom line is he said he can't help unless he sees me so I may have to go back to Baltimore for an office visit. I've been doing physio religiously. They're a great group at the place I go. Very helpful. The muscles have come back but the deep hip pain hasn't stopped, in fact it's gotten worse. This week I'm starting warm water therapy in a pool. I live in San Francisco so in the meantime I'm going to see my local OS and see if he has any ideas what's causing this pain. He only does THR's but is very supportive. I'm also going to e-mail Dr DeSmet. He was the only one who actually put a name to my arthritis (narrowing of the medial wall). I contacted him when I thought I was going to be denied by insurance. Something has to be done. The pain is worse and comes on quicker than before the surgery. It started at 6 weeks when I started 50% weight bearing and hasn't improved in the 5 weeks since then. I just keep thinking why did I fight so hard for a year to get the approval when the surgery turns out worse than before. I'm at wit's end. Thank God for the support my family is giving me. Guest guest
Tom Really sorry to hear about your prediciament. It's bad enough having to cope with pain and worry about your hip, without an unsympathetic OS as well. Hope your local OS is able to help - s/he will at least be able to rule out fracture. Don't forget to take your post-op X-Ray for comparison with the new ones (like I did!). Best of luck. Guest guest
Hi Tom I am so sorry to read of your distress. Perhaps you could send an x ray of your hip to Dr Mont, if you are not able to see him soonest. I am sure he will respond. Good luck. I hope it is resolved quickly. ine C2K 04/03 > > Tom, > > i saw your post last week about your hip pain post surgery but > haven't seen > > you post since. Guest guest
> I've been doing physio religiously....The muscles have come back but the deep hip > pain hasn't stopped, in fact it's gotten worse. Tom, this sounds like maybe tendonitis or bursitis (please forgive spelling). I had a similar experience at about 4-months post op when I over did it, then thought that increased physio would help. Instead, the pain got worse. I finally stopped all physio but walking and very light stretching. On top of this I used ice several times per day. It took SEVERAL MONTHS for the deep hip pain (psoas or groin) to end. Once the pain was gone, I continued with intensive yoga, hiking and biking, however, I stopped ALL flexion exercises for the next year and a half and allowed that severly atrophied muscle to slowly get stronger bit by bit. I started doing active flexion exercises about 6-months ago (very carefully and gently) with progressive and accelerated strength improvement. I still, however, over do it and pull, strain or tear a muscle once in a while. I treat these injuries with ice, advil and rest (walking/light stretching) for a few days and it goes away. This seems to be an iterative process with me and the injuries always seem to both precede and follow increases in my range of motion. My conclusion is that these minor injuries are a part of my healing process. Of course, there is the possibility that you have an implant problem which only a qualified OS can determine. Good luck, stay positive and continue to work the problem bilat C+ july 2001
Guest guest
Tom, Wow, That's really something. You call Mont and all he's concerned about is his public image, meanwhile you suffer. You've just helped me lower my search for a resurfacing doctor by one. I think you need to find a new doctor too. There seem to be so many good, compassionate doctors out there I wouldn't stay with one who isn't. He may not want to admit he made a mistake which is why he's blowing you off. He must have missed the day in medical school when they discussed compassion. You also may want to talk to an attorney just to cover yourself. If you need another surgery your insurance may not pay because it's so soon after the first. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and keep us posted. Jim > Jim, > Thanks for your concerns. Guest guest
Just 'cos I'm feeling cranky... The list has gotten pissy in the last few weeks and that should come to a full stop folks. This is too grim a condition to simply use as a place to grind an axe. Dr. Mont has an excellent reputation and has done excellent work. He does not subscribe to this list and whatever numbskull sent him the digest without putting it in context liberally poisoned this patient/doctor relationship. Gee thanks, can you do any other tricks? Tom, it is unfortunately up to you to save this relationship if you are interested. Jim would just have you sue the guy outright (Jim, do be sure to forward this post to whoever you think you might want to have as your doctor, I'm sure they'll love you for it). Sure it's possible Mont blew it and you're screwed, but I think that highly unlikely. No, talk to him, explain that he was mis-informed and that you want to get to the bottom of this. Explain you realize nobody told him what was in the post and that this was not a smear campaign and definitely tell him you aren't behind anything. From Mont's perspective, he's been drastically slandered by someone he helped and probably does see a looming malpractice suit. He's not going to tell you anything that can be used against him, and his best insurance is to make sure you end up in his office where he can run a battery of tests to ensure everything is as it should be. Unless trust-building measures are implemented asap you'll probably need another physician and you will end up as the looser, not Mont. He knows what he did to you and if there is a problem he is your best hope to resolve it. Remember that going to another surgeon is (most likely) a de facto decision for a THR. Guest guest
I think we all have to be careful not to jump to conclusions. Just because Tom said that Dr Mont mentioned some messages from this group doesn't mean at all that " all he's concerned about is his public image " . From what I have heard about him over the years he is a very caring surgeon, and Tom himself said the situation involving the posts was mostly a misunderstanding over attribution. Tom, I hope you get your situation resolved -- and hopefully it won't require going back in. All my best. - Re: Attn. Tom with pain at 10 weeks Tom, Wow, That's really something.
