Guest guest
Hi Joyce, I guess I get to be the first one to tell you that your 'power-saw- happy' surgeon is VERY misinformed. RUSH TODAY and order this book on Amazon.com, it will be the best 15 bucks you ever spent. Hip Replacement or Hip Resurfacing: A Story of Choices by Peggy All of your questions and answers are in there. And if it were me, I would cancel the surgery appt. for the THR. Life is too short to settle. Lynda rBHR/De Semt / 11/12/2002 > Dear Folks. I just saw an OS today and am scheduled for Total Hip Replacement in February. I asked him about Resurfacing. He doesn't do it and really dismissed it as having " been around for 25 years, not many surgeons do it because it doesn't last. " That seemed to be his main criticism of it. So, I signed up for THR. Now, my question to all of you: Tell me, if you would, what you think of your resurfacing experience. Do any of you have any basis for comparing resurfacing to THR? If so, which do you think is the " best? " I mean: pain gone, mobility restored, occurrence of dislocating hip, and recovery times. > > I just like the idea of holding onto as much of my own bone as possible. Which is one reason why resurfacing seems more appealing to me. > > Feedback, please... Thanks. > sungold518@e... > >

" The Metal on Metal resurfacing procedures being done today have very little in common with the resurfacing devices that were tried 25 years ago. All the early data suggest that modern resurfacing is at least as durable as conventional THR, and produces better functionality, quicker recovery, fewer complications, and less risk of dislocation in the appropriate patients. Wear simulation data indicate that resurfacing should last *longer* than THR, although there isn't enough long-term clinical evidence to prove it yet. You need to do some homework in order to make an informed decision. This group is a pretty good place to start. Check the files and links on the Surfacehippy home page. There's a LOT of information there. Steve
Guest guest
I second the opinion to cancel the surgery and that is UNTIL you find out for sure you are not a candidate for resurfacing. If you are, you really should pursue that. I am 43 and EXTREMELY happy with my resurfacing. I cannot even tell I had surgery and that was less than 5 months ago. However, I won't go as far as Jude and saying " guaranteeing. " There is no guarantee with hip replacement or hip resurfacing, but given the chance, I would definitely take resurfacing over replacement for a first time hip surgery if I were a candidate. Look into this further, try and find an OS near you if possible that does resurfacing and see if you are a candidate. If not, send xrays to an OS that does resurfacing and get their opinion. Most importantly, don't rush anything! Dr. Gross 7/12/
Guest guest
My advice to you is cancel the surgery, Joyce. Research the resurfacing procedure. The rest of your life is at stake. I am completely happy- no make that ecstatic- about my new hip. I am kind of into extreme sports- rock climbing, snow boarding and cycling. I was frankly told by 3 OS that a THR would mean an end to that kind of pursuit. With my resurf I can do anything at all. And I do put it to the test. Two days after surgery I walked around Bruges for 9 hours. I had my op in Belgium. Prior to that I couldn't walk around the block. No pain. Better range of motion than before. Resurfacing- Dr De Smet- gave me my life back. You have come to a good place. There is a wealth of info on this site and links to other sites. I guarantee you won't be sorry. Good luck. Rock climbin' Jude LBHR De Smet 09/11/02 upcoming surgery Dear Folks. I just saw an OS today and am scheduled for Total Hip Replacement in February. I asked him about Resurfacing. Guest guest
Your surgeon is mis-informed. Cancel the appointment, do some serious research and then make the decision. A couple of extra months delay will be well worth it if you come out the other end knowing that the choice you eventually make will at least be an informed decision. My OS pooh-poohed resurfacing........ So I took a second opinion.......and then a third opinion. The result:...... 2 resurfaced hips that have taken me mountain trekking, off-road cycling in the Grand Canyon and the mountains of Italy, motor biking, tennis, etc etc.... All pain free for over 4 years now. Best of luck, whatever your choice and don't forget there is a wealth of experience on this site to tap into. Guest guest
The resurfacing that happens now is VERY different to that that happened 25 years ago. Even the NHS (UK) erecomends resurfacing now for younger people - because of fewer dislocations etc. To: surfacehippy > cc: Subject: RE: upcoming surgery " Dunn " ifa@...> 13/01/2004 10:25 Your surgeon is mis-informed. Guest guest
Hi Joyce. I too was very leary about holding onto as much bone as possilbe - cutting off the top of a perfectly good femur seemed very drastic to me. It wan't until I stumblee upon resurfing that I saw some hope for an alternative. My Os didn't even mention it so I sat on a THR waitlist for two years, thinking that was the only way out of the excruciating pain. Luckily I found this site, discovered Dr De Smet, and had it done 4 months ago. It is wonderful to be in no pain. I am recovering more slowly than the younger active members of this forum, being 59, but I expected that. Not to mention the enforced sedenteary life I have had to lead for the past 5 years. Find an OS who does resurfs and is enthusiastic about them, let him/her look at your xrays to see if you are a good candiddate, and then decide. Good luck Sharry upcoming surgery Dear Folks. Thanks. sungold518@...
