Hi! I am a new SillyYak member with a 7 year old CD daughter.

For about 6 months my daughter has had unexplained body itching with no

presentation of hives or rash. We have tried to discover the source by

allergy testing and eliminating suspected foods, lotions, soaps, etc. --

all with no success.

Since there are no physical manifestations of the itching, I don't

think it is dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). However, I continue to

wonder if body itching can be a component of CD or a another auto

immune disease.

I would very much appreciate any insights into this problem.

With appreciation,

I itch all the time......no rash no hives...no liver

problems..........I think it celiac reaction to gluten and I do get DH

on my lower back and pubic area at times, as well as blistering on my

palms, scalp, forehead and joints.

I'm one of those people who had a ton of things that didn't seem to be related to celiac. Most things I thought were just normal "me" until I went gluten-free. One of those things was itching - mostly arms and legs, and a specific spot on the bottom of my foot. The "foot itch" as DH calls it, is always a sure sign that I got "glutened." Other things that went away with the GF diet were dry, scaly feet; dry, brittle hair; swollen ankles; swollen neck (never knew it was swollen to begin with); big abdomen (thought it was weight gain from having a baby); gas; anxiety...

I definitely think itchy skin can be related to celiac instead of DH. IMHO

Elisabeth,

About 9 months before celiac was questioned in our family, I had horrible

itching all

over my body. For those of you who know what one is like, I honestly felt like I

had a

yeast infection all over my body. Besides the 5 or 6 allergy medicines I was

on, they

started me on a second antihistamine. It did not help. Finally figured out it

might be

more food allergies, and I did test highly positive for wheat, soy and yeast. I

also

think I had an overgrowth of yeast in my body - which being allergic to

yeast.... made me

itch. I had no hives or anything else. Just the intense itching.

So, from my experience, check and see if your body has an overgrowth of yeast.

Also keep

checking for food allergies - I understand it is VERY common to find other

allergies/sensitivities once you change to the GF diet. It is because you are

suddenly

eating a bunch of foods that you have never had before and now are eating a

bunch of.

I understand you have had allergy testing, but I have two points on that for

you. First,

if you only had blood testing, go to a doc that will do skin testing. Every

allergist I

have ever been to has preferred the skin testing as it is more sensitive and

thus they

get a more accurate picture. Also make certain that you not take ANY

antihistamines for

at least 3-5 days before any allergy testing. It will throw the test off. And

you should

note too that NO testing is 100% accurate. I test completely negative by both

blood and

skin to fish/seafood and eggs. Fish and seafood will give me breathing problems

and can

send me to the ER for epinephrine. Eggs I can have in small amounts if they are

baked

into something else; but if it is too much or I eat them straight, my throat

swells shut.

These are not minor reactions so they do not understand why I do not react to

the

testing, but I do. I start reacting from 5 aisles away when they do food demos

in the

stores, so it is not like I even know they are cooking anything.

Check on the yeast thing. Cut out the yeast, the high fructose corn syrups and

vinegar

for a while and see if that gets better. But don't completely rule out the

allergy

component yet either. Keep a food diary, but if you don't see a pattern (if it

seems like

everything) then that is a clue too. I went to the allergist and actually said

it seems

like everything; that was how he knew to test my for things that were common

additives.

It literally WAS everything. No wonder I couldn't figure it out!

Hope this helps. let me know if you have questions I might be able to answer.

From my experience and understanding from reading and a couple of my doctors...this kind of itching is very indicative of allergies, food in particular.

I had continued to have this all over, rashless itching for many years previous to going GF....and it went away about two months later, for several months after being GF. However, in the last several months it has gotten increasingly worse. To the point about a month or so ago, that I made an appointment with a doctor that specializes in Environmental Allergy and that sort of thing. (I was actually considering writing in regard to the appointment I had.)

Unfortunately, some testing does not clearly indicate intolerances or sensativities, sometimes not even allergies (depending on how mild it is.)

So ultimately, my guess is that there is an allergy going on that needs to be discovered.

In my case, it requires daily antihistamines (second generation *and*

first generation) and an anti-leukotriene. Daily showering/rinsing

off, strict environmental controls, and nasal irrigation are all musts.

When antihistamines and steroids don't help, I skip those and look

for something else to suppress my CNS. I'm fond of gin & tonics. ;)
