Go and check out Richie's x-rays @ www.thunderballhip.50megs.com

http://www.thunderballhip.50megs.com/> he had a very nasty hip and

Dr. De Smet resurfaced using the MMT hardware. I also have perthes and

will be having a BHR with Dr. De Smet on the 28th of April.

Kent

Perthes

I was diagnosed with Perthes at 7 and, at 42, can no longer stand

the pain. In addition, my left leg is one inch shorter than my

right which is causing back, knee, and even foot problems. At this

point, my left leg has atrophied to almost no muscle and even my

left butt muscles are noticeably atrophied. Naturally, I feel it's

time to address this.

I have been told by a resurfacing surgeon that I may not be a

candidate because the socket may not be deep enough, due to years of

wear against a deformed ball.

This doc currently uses the Corin product.

Does anyone know of another product that may be more suited to my

condition?

Thanks.

Hi,

You don't indicate which country you come from, to understand what choices

you may have. However, like many others here perhaps you may like to send

your xrays to Dr De Smet for assessment........ From all the postings here

that speak of him, he would likely give you the best advice you could get re

your situation.

With that much atrophication you would be wise to push for a Resurface as

they are harder to dislocate and work very well in atrophied situations. My

hip had not moved for 35 years so atrophy is something I know a bit about.

Your only other alternative is a large headed THR - these don't dislocate as

easily.

hi kent-

yes,

the bhr has a special variation of the acetabular cup

which is designed to anchor itself to your shallow hip

socket with a screw that holds it to your pelvic bone.

i believe that a few hippies here have this option,

maybe you can beckon a call to them for feedback

on your special condition.

also, i found looking through the archived posts with

a search word like " perthes " was an easy way to read

about what others have researched.

good luck,

jeff
