Lobular cancer in situ

Hi,

I need info! 2 weeks ago I had a breast reduction...and when I went

back for my 1 week post op check, I was told I had ductal

hyperplasia/and lobular cancer in situ of the left breast. Right

breast " precancer " .. lobular atypia. 4 years ago I had a biopsy on

the left breast that said the same thing for theleft as this one

does now for the right breast and obviously the left breast now has

progressed down the cancer channel. He immedaitely set up an appt

with a surgeon and said he would connect me with the oncologist. I

see him next Tues. My question and fear is... obviously this lobular

cancer can not be detected per mammo as ALL of mammos post biopsy

have said " unchanged " . A friend of mine also has lobular cancer in

situ and was given the choice of double mastectomy / or " watch and

see " with mammos every year/ blood work every 6 months and

Tamoxifen. I am thinking what good could a mammo do in helping you

to nip this when you can in the early stages? Has anyone been in

this situation and what course of treatment did you take? Ofcourse I

will know more after I see the surgeon about what other diagnostics/

node biopsies I would think/ MRI??.. we will do... as it is in

question ofcourse where onthe breast the tissue came from since it

was found during pathology on tissue froma reduction. I have no

family history as I am adopted to help " gage " things.. and that

scares me as well. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks! Sherry

So sorry for all you have been through, Sherry. I had invasive

carsinoma and DCIS which did not show up on mammograms even though I

had them regularly for 5 years. I noticed a change and that is how

the cancer was found. It showed up on ultrasound, but not on

mammogram. Ask for a copy of your path report. It should tell you

your stage, grade, estrogen status and Her2 status. What your

treatment consists of will depend on these factors so you might want

to educate yourself. If you are seening a surgeon and oncologist you

may want to check out breastcancer.org This site will give you

questions to ask the surgeon and oncologist. From your description

sounds as though the cancer was caught early before it became

invasive. Good luck.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your response. I do have the path report, but I think b/c it was

not done as a biopsy, non of that info is on it. It was merely the path report

on tissue from a reduction..not really a biopsy. I have been reading on here and

so far it looks like I need some blood tests/ hopefully genetic testing since I

am adopted/ lymph node biopsy and an mri or pet scan. I am lucky it does sound

early.. I just don't want to give it a chance to evolve farther in that I can

see from 4 years ago it has already done that in my left breast. I asked surgeon

that did the reduction if it is possible to have that kind of brest cancer in

one place in your breast and a more advanced stage in another part? Especially

with lobular cancer, that seems possible , since it is so hard to detect. Also,

did any of your mammos ever say anything about ductal hyperplasia beffore you

were diagnosed with ductal cancer in situ? From what I understand.. the ductal

hyperplasia is where that " starts " .?

Can you tell me what you had done diaognostically and what treatments you have

chosen? What is the HER2 status?

Thanks!

nne,

Could you educate me as to what I need to make sure surgeon does/ test/ biopsy

wise when I go next Tues? From what I am reading ..even before seeing him I am

leaning towards mastectomy. Even if " in situ " .. even if nodes turn up " clear " ..

why wait for it to become invasive, right? What has been your experience with

cancer? Did you have a mastectomy?

Thanks for your help/ advice,

Hi sherry,

I had/have in situ with clean nodes and I have had 3 reacurances. I had

mastectomy. Came back 2yrs to the day , same place. Had radiation. Came back

in my lungs 2000, had taxatere, herceptin, gemzar, which put it back into

remission. Put on arimidex, that worked for 2 and half yrs. Came back last

yr, had cisplatin, gemzar twice, xeloda pills till about 3 weeks ago. I find

out the 10th what is next in line. And I find out then if it has spread to

my bones. Only thing I can figure out is god has other plans for me, like

research for the doctors. I just live my life and try not to worry. But I

have my days.....good luck sweetie.

Sherry,

Before I had my surgery I had a echocardiagram, chest x-ray and blood work. Each

surgeon might be different in what tests they want done.

Personally if I would have known anyone with bc when I was diagnosed back in

1990 and would have had someone to talk with and get opinions, I would have

opted for a double mastectomy. But that is a personal decision. One reason being

not having to worry about it showing up in the other breast plus I am overwieght

and have large breasts so going without my prosthesis throws my back/neck sort

of out of wack.

Please let us know how you do and what you decide. I will keep you in my

prayers.

Thanks! Sherry

I will keep you in my

prayers.

Hugs
