Dr. Sparling in Vancouver WA and Dr. Boyd in Salem OR (and my personal favorite) both do the Conserve Plus resurfacings. Seems like it would be a lot easier to get just the acetabular component to match your current femoral component. And of course, the other question is if they would be able to do a different component on the femur (this would be like a revision of a resurfacing). The BHR parts are not going to fit your current femoral component--seems a HUGE issue to me. Guest guest
I am truly grateful for having found this group of yours. I live in a small town in Western Washington State and I have yet to find an orthopod who knows ANYTHING about resurfacements. My situation is as follows: I received a Partial Hip Resurfacement from Dr. Amstutz in LA, CA, in 5/99. During the interview he said he was going to implant a FULL resurfacement, but apparently decided during the surgery to only implant the femoral head. He said that there was plenty of cartlidge to last for 7-10 more years (I was 20 years old at the time). Within 1 1/2 - 2 years the entire socket was ground down, and I've been living w/ metal on bone for the past three years. Orthopod's here in the US keep telling me I just have to grin and bear the pain for another 10-20 years, but I am already incapable of full-time employment, and even doing some of the most basic " daddy " things for my 5 year old are out of the question. I cannot run, or even walk quickly, muchless walk more than 100m w/out severe pain. I have been compensating for so long that my entire gait is out of whack, and I have all sorts of muscle spasm issues. I feel it definitely is time to get the full resurfacement done, so I can get back to my life (I was a competitive fencer before my accident and for about 1 year after my resurfacement). However, after investigating all the different models now available I'm strongly leaning towards the BHR resurfacement. I do not feel comfortable going back to the JRI in LA as I felt the follow-up w/ Dr. Amstutz was inadequate. My question is, what do I have to do as a US citizen to get a resurfacement done in the UK? I have no clue, but I really do want to find out how. The idea of being able to do things like fencing, bicycling, and all the " daddy " things is truly motivating. Sincerely,

Guest guest
I'm not exactly sure you have a lot of choices. If you already have a metal Conserve femoral head, you may have to go with the Conserve acetabular device to mate with the femoral component. Mating a BHR femoral component with another brand of acetabular component is something that I would guess no orthopod will do. (I could be wrong). I also live in Western Washington State. Check out Dr. Boyd in Salem, Oregon. I would not hesitate to recommend him. Smucker C+ Boyd, 08/08/2002 Failed (?) Amstutz Resurfacement > I am truly grateful for having found this group of yours. Guest guest
You should get a lot of advice on this matter from members of this forum. It is relatively easy to get your hip done in the UK. The private hospital market in the UK is dominated by six organisations: the NHS and five private hospital groups: BMI Healthcare, BUPA, Nuffield Hospitals, Capio Healthcare UK and HCA International. There are a little under 300 private hospitals and private patient units (PPUs) in NHS Trust Hospitals. These six organisations account for over 80% of them. Suggest you contact one of them as a starter. http://www.nuffieldhospitals.org.uk/ http://www.bmihealthcare.co.uk/ http://www.bupahospitals.co.uk/bhm/hospital_bhm.asp These 3 represent over 100 hospitals and cover a number of surgeons. You'll expect to pay $10,000 to $15,000 U.S. per hip all inclusive (only extras are flight and hotels) - the cost varying mainly due to the surgeon you pick. These 3 groups are able to give you an exact fixed quote. The UK has a large number of experienced surgeons and the 2 main UK hip resurfacing manufacturers MMT (BHR) and Corin (Cormet) should be able to guide you but I would recommend you contact the hospital groups. As a general rule resurfacing is cheaper in the north of the UK than the south. Don't be put off if this is what you want. There are good surgeons available in most countries in the world. If you want more information please ask. Rog BHR 2001 R. Treacy Failed (?) Amstutz Resurfacement > I am truly grateful for having found this group of yours.
