Guest guest
Reg Reynolds I add about a tablespoon or two of half-and-half oat bran and raw wheat bran to my cereal in the morning, and the raw wheat bran part of that does the trick. You could also use Metamucil which, as I recall, is psyllium seed husk (?), another common insoluble fiber that, in small amounts, adds bulk to the diet and is supposed to be good for you. Ask any pharmacist about this. Of course, if the constipation is due to some medical condition which should be addressed, you should be talking to your doctor about that. > > Subject: Remedies for constipation?? > > My son gets constipate alot. Guest guest
Hi all, I wondered if any one had any suggestions for constipation whilst on strong painkillers in hospital as I am due to have RBHR in April. This has been quite bad when I had my previous ops. This now seems to be my worse memory so far as I mentally prepare myself again. Thanks in anticipation Sheila. Guest guest
Hi Sheila I don't normally have a problem, however after a month in hospital after an accident I suffered badly! I was really worried about going in for my BHR and suffering again, however the pain was so much less and I think most importantly, you are up and out of bed hopefully the next day. I didn't have any problems, eat grapes if you like them, not too many fizzy drinks but lots of water, and fibre cereals if you can I think the pain killers are only half of it, as you should be mobile quickly this helps a lot. Good luck LBHR 04/09/01 constipation Hi all, I wondered if any one had any suggestions for constipation whilst on strong painkillers in hospital as I am due to have RBHR in April. Guest guest
Sheila: I know what you mean. In normal life I am very " regular " but after each surgery I have major problems due to the painkillers and it is more than just a nuisance: it is big misery. Iron supplements to help with the blood recovery make it worse. I found relief with " Senekot S " (note the extra " S " ) which in the US is " over the counter " . This was recommended (and given )to me by the nurses in the hospital. This made my last surgery (the hip)problem free constipationwise. BTW don't take Iron supplements based on Iron Sulfate, they are the worst. Guest guest
To Margaret and Ed, thankyou all so much for your advice I shall be making a note of it all. I was given Senna in the hospital last time but not before I had already suffered quite a bit. I shall remember to ask for it sooner this time. Thanks again, Sheila. Guest guest
Also prune juice helps well... I think with all this (figs, prune juice and meds...) you will be more than OK. Might have to watch though cause you won't be able to run to the toilet! good luck Sunita Re: constipation Hi Sheila I had surgery just over two weeks ago. I took a box of juicy figs into hospital with me and had a few each day, starting two days before surgery. No probs...the lady performed regularly!! Guest guest
Sheila As I have Parkinsons I have constant constipation. 2 things work for me 'Licorice' as in 'Licorice Allsorts' of 'Figs' as in Fig biscuits. There are other foods that have Licorice or Fig content. Guest guest
Hi rog, that must be miserable, I feel bad for winging now. I love licorice, so I will get some in. Thanks, Sheila. Guest guest
Sheila, You get used to it - a bit like you get used to arthritic pains. I too love licorice so I have an excuse. Trouble is with the rest of my family sampling my medication :-) Best wishes Rog constipation > > > > > > > Hi all, I wondered if any one had any suggestions for > constipation > > > whilst on strong painkillers in hospital as I am due to have > RBHR in > > > April. Guest guest
We use Metamucil, or Citracel, or Benefiber every night but no harsh laxatives. It at least comes in " Tang " like flavors but cab't remember what other flavors. My husband prefers straight Phsyllium (sp?) but my taste buds are pickier than his. No Joe doesnt have the diarrhea with his , he has the opposite problems severe constipation. They prescribed him something , like the stuff you have to drink before getting a scope done to clean you out, and there is NO WAY he can tolerate it , he said it has the consistency of spit , and as soon as it touches his lips he starts gagging. So he is on his softners and trying a tad of M.O.M and that seems to help some Take care
Guest guest
Hi Alyssa, FWIW, I struggled with constipation my whole life. It finally got worse, accompanied by a lot of bloating, and then the mucus and bleeding started and guess what!? I was diagnosed with UC. I was 44 years old when I got UC. So ... not sure if there is a relationship, but I'd hazard a guess that SCD would make him feel better even if he's not on a collision course with UC or Crohns. If he's willing to give it a try, it would be interesting to see if it made him feel better. I was always a pretty big sugar junkie. Not so much carbs and bread ... but had to have my chocolate every day. :-) Kathy UC since 12/05 SCD since 7/07 > > My friend is severely constipated all the time. If it heals me though, they might look at it differently, because I'll be living proof that it can work =) I was always a pretty big sugar junkie. It was all dark though (the only real chocolate IMO =) ) so it couldn't have been that bad <g>
