Hi Lynette,

As said, reconstruction is a personal decision.

I chose not to do it. It was the one surgery that was optional during my

treatment. The lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy, and mastectomy all had

compelling medical reasons to do. Reconstruction is elective and depends

how you feel about your body and your tolerance for surger(ies).

Do you have to do any chemo or radiation? I am through chemo and on a

year of herceptin. I feel my body is still healing and still handling

various side effects. I'm 90%+ sure I won't do reconstruction, but I

will revisit it after I'm through with all my treatments and depending

on how I feel.

take care,

>Hi Sherry. It sounds like you had a breast reduction, and then the path report

on the

removed tissue revealed some early changes that were reported to you. You never

had an

abnormal mammogram or biopsy, prior to the reduction. The path reports of

removed

breast tissue from reduction procedures often show some abnormalities. But you

did not

actually have any cancer (or even early cancer) so there is no reason to get a

mastectomy.

I hope nobody is actually encouraging you to take such a drastic step. You could

always do

some preventative measures (like raloxifene or tamoxifen) or you could loose

some weight

and increase exercise. You could also make sure to never miss your mammograms

and

exams. Don't make yourself too crazy over a possibility of a subsequent problem.

Best

wishes, Anne

This Site has an overview of LCIS

http://patient.cancerconsultants.com/treatment.aspx?id=654

One thing it mentions is that LCIS is hard to detect via mammos, so they

suggest to have both mammograms & MRIs.

Hi, Sherry, my name is Aly. I had DCIS and due to health problems opted for the

masectomyon ( August 25th,) instead of the radiation. When the pathology came

back they found I had invasive cancer. They said the margins were clear and

that receptors were negative, so no further treatment is necessary. I know the

questions that are running through your head, did they get it is there more? I

will really keep you in my prayers. A good Dr. and support group are

essential, the people in this group are really great. Praying for you Aly.

Hi Anne,

Actually, I did have abnormal mammo/ biopsy 4 years ago..showed

microcalcifacations/ hyperplasia/atypia, which dr then described as on the

cancer chain..so have had a change in 4 years. saw surgeon today that told me no

mri/pet scan/ mammo will be able to tell me anything for probably 2 years or

more due to the reduction... so no " screening " available to help me " watch " it.

he ofcourse could not tell me there is no other " form " of cancer in the breasts,

as this was caught merely by random tissue sampling from reduction. I am going

to see a radiologist/ oncologist and oncologist and breast cancer specialist in

next few weeks to give me more info/ options. He did talk to me about

mastectomy...being 90-99 % effective in preventitive

care. I ofcourse am not crazy about that option having finally small and perky

breasts fromthe reduction. BUT I don;t want to go 2 years w/out screening

available to me even if I am on a drug and have radiation... and I don;t want to

say 5 years from now... " I wish I had taken the preventive route. " Who knows.

I am so confused right now.

Thanks,

Sherry

Thanks Aly,

You are so right.. this tissue was merely found by random tissue that was

taken during the reduction.. what more might there be? I had a biopsy 4 years

ago that showed microcalcifications/ hyperplasia/ atypia..and seems I have moved

down the cancer chain some in 4 years to " in situ " ..biopsy was on same breast 4

years ago as they found this now... and most likely not same site as tissue was

taken from under breast..biopsy was done at top of breast close to axilla. So

many questions..and as you have found.. just when you think you are dealing with

one thing, you find there is more that they did not see or know . I had a mammo

4 months prior to the reduction that showed " no changes " . Today the Dr told me

that b/c of the reduction no mri/ pet scan or mammo will be a useful tool to use

for atleast 2 years ... that they will all look " hot " and like I am full of

cancer due to the tissue injury caused by the reduction. Leaves me in a real

catch 22. Am seeing a radioloigst and an

oncologist and a breast cancer specialist inthe next 2 weeks... which this Dr

set up for me and encouraged me to get as many opinions as I needed to make a

decision. ... so hopefully will gain more info and be able to make a good

decision for me.

Are you having reconsturctive surgery? Thank goodness you made the decision

you did! How are you feeling now?

Thanks for responding and listening! You are in my prayers as well. :>)
