Guest guest
I'm a 47 yr old Marine and will hit a year post op in two days -- no pain, no limp, am really blessed. Work out at least 4x week on elliptical trainer/weights. Tried running multiple times but felt pain in my hip...just enough to worry me -- not sure if in joint or muscle.....anybody in same boat? I know all about working through pain but am hesitant to give it a go in case I'm doing the hip damage. Anybody know any specific exercises that can help get leg/hip back in running shape. Tried not to run, or even to think about it.... but that is really tough. Thanks,
Guest guest
I'm also a year Post-op. What you may be expericencing is inflammation. I ran some at 6 months, but decided to wait a year for all the soft tissue to heal. I did not experience any difficulties, but went on a regiment of leg work to strengthen my hip flexors and surrounding muscles. I do abduction, adduction, horizontal leg press, calf raises and hamstring curls along with lower ab crunches(real good for the psoas muscle). I now feel more comfortable to start running again. I will use the track at the school near my home because its soft and provides alot of give. Good luck C+ 3/13/03 Dr.Mont
Guest guest
one year post op is pretty long (safe time)...I started about 5-6 months post op and had pain similar to yours, but by now (almost 1 yr. too) it is fully gone; I think my muscles (all of them around both hip joints) were very very weak. I tried to make them stronger NOT by running but with exercises and weights--that helped a lot. you will be hurting if you go back to running, De Smet told me that is normal, but try to run on soft, like grass, trails and I do a lot of tread-mills. Also, mix it up and gradually improve your miles (elliptic 20 min, get on TM 20 min, elliptic 20 min). You are not in a hurry, right!!! take care Miren Running Tips I'm a 47 yr old Marine and will hit a year post op in two days -- no pain, no limp, am really blessed. Guest guest
Mr. McMinn doesn't allow any running for one full year. The physiotherapist told me it's because running puts 9 times the stress on the joint (as compared to walking), and it needs that year to get strong. So don't worry, probably with lots of exercises you will feel able to run in the next few months. Several long-term hippies have told me that they keep noticing improvements in their mobility for at least two years. Many of us are not running at all, so far, and when we do try it, it will be on a soft surface. There are a few young people who seem to be able to go back to running very soon, and it may be easier for men than women, but don't measure yourself against those " wonderkids " . Everyone heals at their own rate. n rBHR Oct.17/04 McMinn
Guest guest
Hi n, Are you sure that Mr McMinn does not allow ANY of his patients to run for a full year, or was this a recommendation specific to you? If this is the case, he has changed his advice. When I had mine done in 1999 he said I could start running gently after about three months, but to ramp it up gradually over the year. Guest guest
, I am three years post op. I have had the same problems. I ran 6 miles last saturday, the farthest I have every run. I usually get pain in my hip after 2 or 3 miles. It does get better. I try to stretch a lot. That does help. Do some brisk walking also. I think as long as you stop when the pain gets bad you will be alright. Just listen to your body. Good Luck.
