Barbara, I'm so glad to hear all went well today! I would love to hear all

about the coming weeks/months, and how Tom adjusts to his new ear-wear.

Where did he have the surgery done?

Take care,

Stefanie

Hi Stefanie - he had it done here at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

in Lebanon NH (which is 15 min from my house!). Glenn 's worked

with both boys since they were diagnosed (as ENT), the felow who did the

anesthesia is my younger son's baseball coach so it was a pretty

comfortable group to be with!

What wonderful news, Barbara! Thanks for keeping us

posted. I was thinking about you all today.

Sending my baby off to ear tube surgery was the

toughest thing I've ever done. I asked if I could stay

in there during the surgery ... they nearly lauged me

out of the room!

I hope things continue to go smoothly for Tom.

Well, they LOVED him in the OR and in recovery - everyone kept saying

how cute he is (although at 13, I'm not sure he's thrilled at being

cute!). So perhaps girls will follow... :-)

Hi Barbara

Congrats! So excited for you and Tom! Gives me motivation to shoot for the

summer for . Does Tom have to be on antibiotics? If so, how long. is

anaphylactically allergic and has to take massive steroids for any antibiotics

which is why we've put off the CI.

Again...so happy that all went perfectly!

It's tough sending them off...I've had to do it multiple times for .

Stomach surgery as an infant, cardiac catheterization at age 2, tubes at age 3

and open heart surgery at age 6. Makes me reluctant to do it again as each time

I feel like I'm dying inside. Once again, though, Tom's great success with the

procedure helps me get over this...at least for this month!

Reading about wheeling them off to surgery reminds me of Allie's second CI

surgery. She was 2.5 she loved her surgeon. I remember she was sitting up in

her gurney and the surgeon and pediatric anaesthesiologist came over and

said it was time. Her surgeon, bless his heart, asked Allie if she wanted to

go for a ride.. so the last thing I saw of Allie was her being taken through

the big double doors yelling 'faster! faster!' to her surgeon. I still had

butterflies but it was hard to worry so much the second time around.

Barbara,

I'm really glad to hear that everything went OK. And I

know what you mean about sending a kid into surgery.

Even if it's just for something " simple " like ear

tubes, leaving them is hard. I hope everything

continues to go really well for Tom.

Great news Barbara. Hope Tom is up and about today and collecting lots of

Tom's surgery today

Hi everyone - Tom (our 13 year old) had his CI surgery today! He did

really well - our surgeon said that it couldn't have gone better (music

to my ears!). And our audiologist verified that indeed, all the

electrodes are happy and working - yay!

We got to the hospital around 7:00 this morning; Tom went into surgery

around 8:40. He was very nervous at first - he's really scared of shots

but fortunately, he's still small enough that he had gas first, once he

had that, he was then given the IV. The anesthesiologist was pretty

funny - as he was giving Tom gas, he asked Tom who his best friend is.

Tom repied " Win " . So the anes. asked Tom what win looked like - Tom let

him know. The anesthesiologist proceeded to put " win's " face on the

breathing bag! So Tom's last thoughts were of his best friend, which

was pretty nice.

He woke up slowly and was in pain, was given more pain meds and went

back to sleep but then woke up an hour later very lucid (and hungry and

thirsty). We left the hospital to come home around 4:30. One accident

in the car (I think being in the car made Tom dizzy). but he's resting

comfortably now.

He was in the recovery room talking to Win on the phone and is telling

his friends he got a brain transplant! Oh - and he's psyched that he'll

have bandages to wear to school next week so the girls will feel sorry

for him **sigh**.

I'm completely exhausted. Sending my child on a stretcher down the hall

to the OR without me was the hardest thing I've ever done - ever. Hugh

(my husband) went with him to the OR and stayed until he went to sleep.

Now that the surgery is over, I've allowed myself to get excited about

what comes next. A lot of hard work, to be sure but I'm hoping it will

enrich Tom's life. I'll keep you posted! thanks so much for your

thoughts and prayers for him.

Hi - thanks for your good words (and to everyone!). I'm catching

up on what seems like a zillion emails and wanted to respond to this. I

double checked with my husband and neither of us believe that Tom had

any antibiotics at all - either during and for sure not, after.

He's in such a cheery mood today it's hard to keep him quiet! He's

feeling so much better...

Take care!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I do believe both times Allie had

CI surgery she had an antibiotic pushed through her iv before it was taken

out. I think this is standard practice when you have any kind of surgery?

I figured they would during surgery, but last time we had checked out for a

CI, they recommended 6 weeks of antibiotics afterwards..guess due to the

meningitis issue? For those whose children had the surgery, did they or did

they not require antibiotics afterwards.
