Guest guest
Hi- I've never posted before.just been lurking from behind the scenes. Our youngest daughter (11) is moderate to severe and slight to moderate.wears aides with a FM system. We didn't find out that she had a loss until she was between 4-5 years old. Her speech wasn't wonderful, but we assumed that she was modeling after her sister's who were in speech therapy (no loss, just therapy in school to correct them). We had her tested at pre-school screening and that is when we found out. We went through the guilt thing about not figuring it out for ourselves etc. (I assumed that she had three 6's in the back of her head because the kid 'just didn't listen'.) We're fairly rural where we live, so social outings are going to town to get groceries etc-no real way to 'test' with peers etc. As far as I know they didn't test her when she was born and never tested during all the usual pediatric visits. She's above average in school.lip reads (though if you ask her she will deny it).has done some signing, but not a lot (it was suggested that we really push the speech and worry about the signing if she lost the rest of her hearing). Overall things at school have been good.though we've switched to another district (from one where I was Chair of the School Board-a great help since I was privy to all the IEP/state requirements without having to fight to find out about them) and can't seem to make them understand that they need to REALLY push the speech therapy. I would certainly prefer not to have her in speech when she hits the Junior/High School level. She likes speech, probably because they tend to be one-on-one.
