this is one of those subjects that is rather unpleasant and so is not talked about much, but I need info/advice.........mucus........is my worst enemy. When I can't cough it up, keep coughing, sats drop, very sob, very weak, feel like passing out. This condition hasn't hit me for some time. I use liquid acetylsysteine 3 times a day and drink lots of water. (I've found that makes alot of difference) My wife works at the hospital and thinks I should go be seen, and I think that's a waste of time....and lots of money. I did a sputum sample 2 days ago and they found no reason to give me antibiotics. I think this is associated with a virus going around though I have no other symptoms.

Question: has anyone heard of or experienced mechanical suction? I read that term on the fact sheet that comes with the acetylsysteine a long time ago. Is that something they do? Sounds like a bronch to me, conjures up some not too pleasant pictures in my head........I think todays session is winding down. But for future reference.......Thank you!!!!

Jim,

My experience with using mechanical suction is limited to patients with a tracheostomy. Using this type of suction in your case would probably not be terribly appropriate. You would need to bring mucus up to a certain point to have it be suctioned or you're correct what you end up doing is as invasive as a bronchoscopy.

Are you running a fever? The negative sputum culture from 48 hours ago is excellent but don't let things go too long without being checked again. Hopefully you're at the end of a virus. Keep up the NAC and lots of water. Keep that mucus as thin as possible and keep us posted!

Jim, There is a vest that vibrates to help bring the mucus up and out. Talk to your Dr. about it I am sure hewill know what they are called. My sister has copd and uses one. Of course! My name is Diane, I was diagnosed with IPF in mid-

December, and live in West Virginia. Hello to all of you, and

especially the other newcomers. I've checked with the posts every day

the past few days, since I registered, and can tell that you all are

so supportive of each other. Right now I am doing very well, though

the prednisone (50 mg/day) is wreaking havoc on my body AND mind, I

just tell myself how fortunate I am that the prednisone is working so

well. I read on one of the websites that only about 35% of IPF

patients have success with the prednisone.

I look forward to becoming a part of this group. Thanks for the

welcome!

That 35% number was fairly indicative last time we took a poll here.

Now, sometimes people find the easiest way is just to try and see if

they fit in that group. However, if one has determined the precise form

of PF and knows of any other conditions such as autoimmune diseases and

from biopsy and/or CT's has seen if there is inflammation then you can

make a pretty educated guess as to whether it is likely to help.

For instance, it does help most forms of PF other than UIP. Sometimes

even if UIP is accompanied by inflammation it will provide some

temporary relief. It also is often beneficial if there is an underlying

autoimmune disease. There are doctors who would say let's try to

pinpoint and then try and there are others who say lets just try. If

they try and it works they may even change their minds on the form of

disease.

As far as I know, with all the firefighting we did yesterday, I dont believe the

ambulance strike team got called.? Now I know the Red Cross Disaster Relief was

called to Hamilton County for the fire there, which got some of my families

land.? Look at Mena, Arkansas and the tornado that went through there last

night.? National Guard Troops are having to go there because it is deemed

unsafe.

Re: Question

Resources on any large wild fire are dependant upon the needs of the

incident hence this is the call of the Incident Commander. If he or she feels

they need a Strike Team then they can easily request one or more as they see

fit for deployment as they see fit.

I have used Ambulance Strike teams in a Staging Area on large wild fires

when I was concerned that a wind shift might cause the need to evacuate a

small long term car facility.

I put an Engine Strike Team along with a Tender Strike Team as well as the

Ambulance Strike Team in the parking lot of the LTC facility. Their only

mission was to defend and protect the LTC should the Engine Strike Team

Leader feel that the LTC needed to evacuate should the wind shift. The ESTL had

the authority to make that call delegated to him by me as the IC. The wind

did shift but in the opposite direction of my concern so we eventually

redeployed the Engine and Tender Strike teams and released the Ambulance

Strike team.

So a definite maybe.
