Guest guest
I contacted European Medical Care some time ago on a 'free-fone' line and subsequently received a folder of information regarding the services offered by hospitals in Belgium. I was quoted a price for hip re-surfacing which would take place in a hospital which appears to be first class and also has intensive care. My stay would be 5-7 days with physiotherapy for 2 hours per day and the all-in price is £5.998. There are no waiting lists and surgery can be booked with 7-10 days notice. An additional week's stay including a full course of physiotherapy would be £450. For accompanying family or firneds there is accommodation (B & for £20 per night. Two OS names they gave me are Dr.DeGedt and Dr.Dauwe has anyone heard of either of these two surgeons? and can give some feed-back. I have been reading all the very positive posts about Dr. Desmet and wonder where he operates is it only a clinic? as I must admit I am not very excited by the prospect of recuperating in a Holiday Inn! Guest guest
Dr De Smet operates at the Jan Palfijn Hospital in Gent. It's dated by US standards but then so is Europe! Everything works, it is well staffed and very efficient. The surgical team and OR is first rate. The Holiday Inn used for rehab is a very nice change of pace with excellent food and a visiting nurse and physiotherapist. The staff is very attentive, taxis into town are free evenings and weekends and the atmosphere is very upbeat. The focus is on getting you out of the hospital and back on your own two feet asap. I don't know a thing about the other 2 docs you mentioned but did come across the same site you reported in my pre-op meanderings. It sounds well organized but I've not heard of anyone who has actually gone that route. Hope this helps. Guest guest
SV, Thanks for the post. A lot of Welsh people have been using Euromed and the 'Wales on Sunday' newspaper did a lengthy piece about the service and interviewed several people who had had surgery and all were very happy indeed (it seems). It's just that I have never seen the OS names up anywhere or known of anyone personally who have used Euromed. Thanks Sue Re: Surgery in belgium Dr De Smet operates at the Jan Palfijn Hospital in Gent. It's dated by US standards but then so is Europe! Everything works, it is well staffed and very efficient. Guest guest
If they are in Antwerp I would be careful as I have heard that the docs there are not experienced and have only observed the resurfacing procedure as opposed to actual training. Guest guest
Sue, I too have contacted Euro-med about resurfacing and found they are a little cheaper and everything is included for a 9 day stay. I am also looking for some more information about them and have contacted them about US patients they have resurfaced. Per Nick Fern their contact their Doctors have done alot of resurfacings. One of the doctors names is DeGent, can't remember the other. They have more information on their website. I have made a surgery appointment with DeSmet for April 28th, but still gathering information about other options. I'll keep it posted as I get more. Guest guest
Hi! Thanks for the information. What is the web address for Euromed please? so I can check it out too. Euromed's surgeons are regarded highly by patients from my area who have been to their surgeons for hip resurfacing. Thanks again Sue Surgery in belgium > > I contacted European Medical Care some time ago on a 'free- fone' line and subsequently received a folder of information regarding the services offered by hospitals in Belgium.
