Cyst on acetabulum?

Hi gang

I very recently sent Dr.De Smet my xrays for evaluation to determine

if I was a candidate for hip resurfacing. My OS here in Corpus

Christi had told me that I have OA and did hip arthroscopy and

debridement 12/03 with no positive results and am now having more

pain walking (limping and on crutches) than I did before

arthroscopy.

Dr.De Smet looked at my films and wrote that I have a cyst on my

pelvis (acetabulum). I have never heard that diagnosis-- he amazws

me. I am curious why the 3 OS that I have seen since my pain began 3

years ago and numerous hip xrays and body scans and MRIs with

contrast, that none of them ever saw a cyst. What do you think???

I have a good relatinship with these guys and I will ask them. Dawn

Hi Dawn

Bad luck having a cyst - they hurt like hell don't they! I had X-rays

in Nov 2001 when I started my quest for NHS treatment in the UK -they

showed huge cysts on the femoral head but the acetabulum was OK. When

I finally gave in and sought private treatment in May 2002 those

cysts had grown and I had some new ones on my acetabulum. I think my

case of OA is fairly typical. It started with many years (20) of

mild discomfort (on and off) and only a v. minor effect on my life.

Then the cartilage seemed to reach a critical point and began a

massive and rapid deterioration - that's when the cysts appeared. So

maybe your cysts really weren't there last time they looked.

Incidentally - what is de Smet's approach to cysts (graft?, cement?)?

Good luck

kathy

Kathy,

Dr. De Smet filled in my two (small) cysts with cement.
