He says in all types of hypo there is a T4 to T3 conversion problem....and this is one reason hypo folks are not adequately treated. He relates this to the fact that is known in sickness that there is decreased production of T3 and an increase in Reverse T3. And then says docs are not considering that hypo is a chronic illness. He talks about the " second control system " that exists within the cells themselves..where there is conversion to T3 and Rev. T3. In this system, Type II de-iodinase, controls the conversion of T4 to T3. Interesting enough, he talks about how this enzyme is also inhibited by high levels of T4....and why T4 levels need to be monitored. too much T4 and you have depression and mental problems too. One reason why Synthroid patients may not be doing well as far as depression. So - you may not have this enzyme - or not in sufficient amounts? He also talks about a third control which is in the thyroid binding sites themselves. this is where the thyroid resistance comes in - the body does not respond to normal amounts of thyroid hormone.
