Secondly, to Dr. Mont and his fine staff in Baltimore for doing such a fantastic job on me. He always likes to kid me that I really made him work " overtime " on me. Well whatever he had to do, it worked. And third, to you propective surfacehippies out there, congratulations on finding this site and doing your own research. , great job on www.activejoints.com. It's tough sometimes to go against the conventional wisdom out there but I'm sure glad that I found your site and Dr. Mont. Three years ago he was one of six surgeons in the U.S. offering resurfacing. Now, it looks like there are a lot more choices and opportunities out there. Terrific! As luck would have it I am slipping into a cancellation with Dr. Mont this week, so this time next week I'll have crossed over to your side with a new right hip joint. I have some questions for the surface hippies. As this is such short notice I won't benefit from the orientation session they recommend. What should I count on wearing home ? Loose fitting sweatpants ? I assume the swelling is a real issue. We'll be driving back 4 hours to Connecticut in a four door sedan. I'm told we'll need to stop frequently, but that travelling by car is not an issue. I am an otherwise healthy and trim 56 year old, with good upper body strength. Only need one hip done as well. Any suggestions from the group as to the car journey back ? Captain Amaze O ? I recall your tale of the Michigan drive. What should I count on ? Garbage bag for the seat slide ? I've been lurking for 3 months and feel as up to speed as I could be, thanks to the contributions and enthusiasm of everyone on the site. The power of the internet is incredible when you see what we can learn from our colleagues around the globe while sitting in front of a PC. Appreciate any and all advice. Thank you. Guest guest Posted February 23, 2004 Report Share Posted February 23, 2004 Hi, 3 weeks ago I had my left hip resurfed by Dr Gross in S.C. I live in Northern KY, so it was a 10 hr drive each way. I was a week post-op when I rode home. I had no problems at all with pain or anything like that. I was very tenuous about getting in and out of the car, but found a way that worked for me. The most helpful thing was that I'd taken along a firm bed pillow. It " evened out " the contour of the bucket seat and I could " sit flat. " Since we were traveling in the South, we hit most " Cracker Barrel " restaurants since they had wonderful handicapped equipt bathrooms. That worked out well. Really my only problem post-op was anxiety/panic which I'm pretty sure was a response to the morphine and codeine. THAT was awful. My sister, who drove the car, had to listen to , , & sing " Row the Boat A'shore " for 3 states! It soothed me... I still have times when I feel anxiety lurking back in the shadows and I still have absolutely no regular sleep pattern. I hope this goes away -- suspect it will. Guest guest Posted February 23, 2004 Report Share Posted February 23, 2004 Fred, Dr. Mont and his crew will take good care of you. He's a piece of work and a terrific surgeon. I honestly can't remember all the details of the ride home, however, we broke our trip up to Toledo by stopping in Pittsburgh, about half way or four hours. Sounds like you got the routine down, loose sweats, etc. Keep the TEDs on until they tell you to take them off. I'm glad I did the orientation, however, you could get all the information from the nurses and staff that you need. I found them very helpful. I remember my back hurting more than anything else, mostly from having to sleep on my back. I found it helpful to sit up in a chair most of my hospital stay and read a book. I journalized my ordeal three years ago on this site but I haven't been able to search that far back to review it. It'll be a long few days after the surgery for you but you'll be thankful later on. My incision seeped quite a bit and I had to change the dressing often. The most amazing thing is that when you wake up, the hip pain is history. But you'll still be a little sore. You had one hip done either April of last year, or March of this year (depending on which side of the big pond you are on), but have the other scheduled for the same time?
