The best price I found was the Walgreens meter for $18 and 100 strips for around $45 Mike

Guest guest
MIKE, thank you so much, I have been reading alot of mail on this site for weeks now, and today I just had to jump in, your answer was so complete, thank you, but is 6.2 okay, I know it is low compared to some on the site, but I thought pass 6. you were considered to have diabetis, this disease scares me more than my thyroid cancer of '99. Thanks, Joyce Re: Re: A1C testing..- eating > > Excuse me but I am new, do you need a doctor's scrip to purchase a meter, > I > was diagnosed with pre-diabetic, my son is a diabetic, and I want to try > and > monitor my blood now, my fasting glucose was 96 and my A1c was 6.2, I read > here where 6. is the aim to reach, so where do I stand with my blood tests > results??? > JOYCE No, you don't need an Rx to get a meter. HOWEVER, you may need one if you expect your insurance to pay for it. Ask your doctor if you should test and tell him you would like an Rx to make sure your insurance would cover it (of course, make sure your insurance will pay based upon your diagnosis too, some may only pay for insulin dependent individuals, and if you are not on any meds, they may not pay... call your insurance company to find out for sure). You may find you don't even need an Rx for your insurance to pay. What will you do after you test? You should probably talk to your doctor about that as well! If you aren't taking any meds, the only things to adjust are food intake and exercise. Your food intake will make the most difference, (quantity as well as items)... you would probably find it helpful to talk to a dietitian to develop a meal plan. Hi Joyce, First thing, do not let diabetes stress you. Your doctor will set goals for you and will work with you to meet those goals. Here is the link to the Joslin Diabetes Center. It shows their guidelines for blood glucose goals. Your doctor may set your goals higher or lower depending on your overall health. _http://www.joslin.org/Beginners_guide_523.asp_ (http://www.joslin.org/Beginners_guide_523.asp) Also, at the Joslin site, there is an article on depression and diabetes. You may want to read that. I had very aggressive breast cancer in 1995 and I can truly say I would much rather have diabetes. I could not control the cancer, I can control diabetes. hugs Eunice

Guest guest
I and you, and all the millions of others Rose, will only win when there's a cure for diabetes. It may not happen in my lifetime but we can live in hopes. Take care. Barry UK Re: A1C testing..- eating > Barry: I got my info from my doctor. However, everyone on this site > likes to argue with you, but I won't. So, you win. > Rose
