Hello I have just had an appointment with Mr Cobb an excellent

surgeon in London specialising in the spine and hips. His patient

manner and record is excellent and he really talked me through

resurfacing.

I asked does resurfacing really work.He said we dont have the

historical data, but the theoretical basis is excellent, the

technology its based on its does have an excellent history and

ongoing results are very good. I asked about ceramic, he did say

ceramic hips are excellent and the shattering problem was due to

incorrect manufacturing for one batch, space age ceramics are

extremely tough they use them for porsche brakes, but they dont have

the technology to do ceramic resurfs.

Interestingly he said, UK doctors are voting with their hips and

going with MOM resurfacing. They are looking into chromium transfer,

he doesnt believe it is a problem in most patients, worst case say

there is theoretically a problem in a patient 30 years in the future,

they can just replace the prothesis. But there is still concern of

metal transfer accros the placental barier in pregnant mothers and

some doctors will opt for the ceramic option for women who want to

have children.

He was very positive on resurfacing, the second orthapedic surgeon

who I have met (who has experience of resurf) and was so positive

which was comforting.
