Hi everyone,

What works for me is also writing everything down that I eat and

being accountable for it. Also pre-planning my meals. My biggest

stumbling block are social events. I tend to let my guard down and

get caught up seeing people eating food all around me. I

think.... " Why can't I have a pice of cake too? "

What works:

* meticulously journaling

* measuring my food (I'm really bad at judging portion sizes)

* choosing my food before I go to a restaurant and mentally

rehearsing (seeing myself ordering that food and nothing other than that

food - because I'm so easily swayed by what I see, I don't even look at

a menu!)

* attending two meetings a week keeps me on track during tough

times

* drinking all my water

* eating 5 fruits and veggies a day (makes me feel so GOOD about

myself!)

What doesn't work:

* Like you said Maureen, just winging it doesn't work! I have to

plan ahead (those who fail to plan, plan to fail!)

* going into a restaurant spur of the moment, un-prepared (without

my dining out guide)

* waiting for motivation to " strike " me

* " hate " doesn't work....I don't seem to lose weight during the

weeks I'm trying to motivate myself by negative emotions (I hate my

body, I hate my fat thighs, etc...) The weeks I've made an effort to

think positive thoughts (I have a strong body, I'm so glad I have legs

that carry me, Thank you Lord for health today) I lose weight

* shifting into neutral and thinking, " Oh what the heck...I'll

just splurge today " and then a week later I'm still off program. I have

to stay conscious and make healthy decisions daily.

* drinking too much soda instead of my water

* Friday is " doughnut and pizza day " at my house...our local

grocer has doughnuts on sale cheap on Fridays, as well as 5 dollar

family size pizzas. So, it had become a tradition that we do doughnut

and pizza day on Fridays. Most of the time I can cope with the pizza (I

just buy myself a WW pizza and make that) but those doughnuts! Even if I

successfully stay away from the kitchen while they are unloading all

those yummy treats, when I come downstairs to clean up after breakfast,

I will eat all the " leftovers " (who can throw doughnuts away?) So you

can see, doughnuts are a " red-light " food for me!

So, after months of this, I finally spoke up and told my husband,

" Please honey, you and the kids are skinny and can eat doughnuts all you

want, but I am not at a place where I can handle doughnuts right now.

Can we please NOT have doughnut day every week...maybe just have it once

a month instead? " And of course, because he is a supportive, great guy,

he said yes. (of course, the kids are disappointed, but they understand

too!) Now, with doughnut and pizza day only being ONCE a MONTH I can

budget my points and actually enjoy a doughnut instead of scrounging

leftovers and cramming them into my mouth, thinking " if I eat them

really fast, and no one sees me, then the points don't count - right? "

Question of the day 7/2

What's working on your weight loss journey...and what is your stumbling

blocks along the way.

My Answer:

What works: Journaling honestly, eating the right mix (lots of fruits

and veggies, protein, carbs, little " real " fat), exercising, drinking

all my water, planning, going to my meetings, online support

What doesn't work: just winging it!!!!!!

What about you?

Writing everything down that I eat works for me, too, Anne. I am facing 2 days

this weekend, Saturday at my Nephews house and a big family reunion, and Sunday

at my daughters house for a family Fourth of July celebration. Both days will be

crammed with food. My lecturer said that I can have a spoonful of several

something's that I want, and count each spoonful as a point. She said you would

be surprised at how many people do this at big gatherings, and are grateful when

someone starts the spoonful only servings, rather than full servings. Also, she

said, portion control is everything in this game of losing weight. She said use

my FP's to help on both days. So I have not used any FP " s since WI day, which

was Wednesday. And only a few of my AP points. 2 other people who are going

Saturday are on WW also, and like me, are taking foods that are low in points.

It's also a birthday celebration, as well as a family reunion, so, I am planning

to have a taste of the cake, and hope I will be strong. They live out in the

country, so hope I can talk someone in to taking a walk after dinner, and before

fireworks. I am taking my pedometer. This will be the first BIG social event

back to back that I have attended since I started WW in March. Wish me luck.

Others were smaller, and I was more in control. So, Anne, maybe you can have

that piece of cake...just a spoonful and 1 point. I am going to try it.

Congratulations on your loss. Keep up the good work. Pat from Kansas City

Thank you for making me feel better about my " social

phobia " and food. I end up getting so stressed ot about it that I

set myself up for fialure. We are having company Sunday and we are

grilling yummy 0 pt. veggies, fish, and chicken breasts. Oh...yes

the cake issue....I am making a lime/blueberry cake that was in this

month's issue of WW mag. You make it in the crockpot and a serving

is only 3 pts. It sounds super yummy so I'll get back to you guys to

let you know how it is!

1. I have to pre - eat veggies before I go into a restaurant or else I find

it too difficult to be in control of what I eat because I'm so hungry. The

other way I can sort of put the brakes on it is to journal what I am ABOUT

to eat BEFORE I eat it - that kind of brings me back to earth. I have a

Claimjumpers appointment with the other half in a week. That's the place

that WW doesn't even list in their books because nothing is really points

friendly and quantities are beyond Supersize. I know I am going to have to

really watch it and be very FULL with veggies BEFORE I go there or it will

be a disaster! :)

2. " hate " doesn't work.... " I found that what motivated me to be rather

immovable was not looks at all because I think we all know inside that if we

are beautiful - we are that way fat or thin and if we are not so good

looking, being slim doesn't help things. What motivates me is health.

Being OP is simply the healthiest way to live and at the age of 60, I like

that health. I like not having to go to the doctor so often and take tons of

meds like so many around me my age. I like going out on my bicycle for a

nice long ride - nothing feels quite as good and cleansing to the mind and

spirit. I love going to the doctor and my blood pressure not even being a

point of discussion because it's totally in the normal zone, not even

borderline high like it was for so many years before WW. Awesome! Health

is quality of life.

3. " you and the kids are skinny and can eat doughnuts all you want "

Remember the man in SUPERSIZE ME. Fast food and transfat did NOT make him

fat. He ended the month at a bodyfat percentage of 17 percent which is

STILL slim for a guy (average is 19 percent). But what his Mac's diet

DID DO, is begin to fry his liver. We can say " no one eats that much

Mac's " but we must ask ourselves if a month of veggies and " good food "

even IF eaten in access would begin to fry our livers. I think not. I

think no one can afford to eat " all the doughnuts they want " whether they

are fat or slim - I think the movie SUPERSIZE ME points out that a lot of

the fast and " fun " food albeit tasting good, is somewhat poisonous. His

g/f's comment was precious in answer to his " it tastes good " comment. She

said " well heroin feels good also but does that mean we should indulge? "

Approaching WW from a health-only point of view, my take is a bit different.

I feel that everyone needs the program whether they are fat or thin because

it's the best way to live. Sharing that with your family is a very nice

thing you can do for them. And if they have to go out for their junk food

(and I know my other half does indulge at work sometimes) at least, their

intake is greatly minimized. This alone could go far to save their lives.

The last 5 people who died suddenly in my life, were NOT fat. They all,

however, down to the man, made very poor dietary choices and did not

exercise regularly.
