U.S. Customs Announcement--Good News

I got the good new off of my MSN homepage, but anyway, U.S. Customs has made the announcement that they are no longer going to be stopping importation of well needed medications at the Canadian border, they are turning things back over to the FDA, who had been much more relaxed about a 90 day supply of a needed medication across the border, for most of the time. Customs says that it's going to start concentrating on the huge shipments of illegal drugs that are being snuck across our borders, since those are going to be potential for people selling them over here, etc......As long you order only a PERSONAL 90 day supple, you're going to be ok, so goes their announcement. I think that was yesterday or day before's news.

I'm so glad to hear that! That makes so much more sense anyway, to only target the big shipments. I'm very glad for all of you who rely on external sources to be able to get what you need again!

I'm dealing with the FDA now on my shipment... according to their most recent letter to me, and the info I got off line this morning... there is no legal way to import thyroid drugs... the only drugs that can be imported as a 'personal 90 day supply' are medications that are not produced in the US, have been started as part of a treatment protocol that began in another country that does manufacture the medication OR are medications that are used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS and are not manufactured in the US.

According to the info that I've dug up so far, it's not even legal to import thyroid medication, and most others, even with a prescription. They have a 'loop hole' that says if a medication is manufactured in the US and then exported, then is purchased outside the US and brought back in, it's now an illegal medication.... and any medication that is manufactured outside of the US and brought in is illegal cause it's not FDA approved...

This letter to me also includes that this is being done for my safety.... they use nicer words but basically it says that I'm too stupid to take care of myself and so they are going to do it for me.

I have until the 22nd of this month to respond to them with a LEGAL reason that my shipment should be released to me, or they will send it back to the manufacturer... again.

All this BS, combined with the fact that I've been short dosing for months now (while my meds are sitting in some warehouse in San Francisco), has me so depressed and feeling so physically rotten.. I'm just about ready to curl up in a corner and croak and get it over with...

The other part of me says that some how we need to take a stand and do something about this... I'm not the only one that can't get medical coverage and needs thyroid meds to survive.. there are thousands of us... If we can come up with some decent information and maybe get something changed.. we won't have to keep going through this...

My first shipment arrived from the manufacturer in less than two weeks, that was mid July... and I still have no meds. This is ridiculous, stupid and inhumane, in my opinion....

Argggh.... I don't even know if I'm making sense... I'm angry.. I'm hurting... I'm scared ... and I'm tired

That happens to all of us at times, typing in the wrong name, hehehe, no harm....

I'm trying to stretch it out the pills that I have left, to make them last a bit longer and so that when I do run out I'll already be accustomed to a lower dose and won't crash all of a sudden... All it's doing is letting the symptoms build more slowly....

T4 gives me tendon problems, so I can't take much of that... right now I'm on

50 mcg T4 five days per week

and

6 1/4 mcg of T3 on an alternating schedule... two days of T3 and then one day without...

My 'good' dose, the level at which I felt my best and had good basals, was at 4 1/2 grain of natural per day... So... I'm not a happy camper...

It was on the MSN homepage from a couple of days ago, so its going to be in their archives. They didn't say that it was legal at all, but there wasn't so much talk about that as there was that they were going to start leaving people alone, i.e., U.S. Customs is not handling this any more, it's back to the FDA. Wasn't your shipment a really large one? If it was, that may be what brought attention to it. I'm certainly not going to say that mine will never be stopped, but it may be less likely (fingers crossed). Have you told the FDA, in writing, what kind of a physical and financial bind that you're in? What do they say to this.

Re: U.S. Customs Announcement--Good News

, do you have a link for this announcement?

I just read the article, and apparently it's only lightened up on people bringing back 90 day supplies physically after a visit to canada, not the mail-order purchases, but they intend to also lighten the restriction on the mail-order ones too. Maybe send a letter to your congressmen, to homeland security, to everyone you can think to send letters to, to try to help push this faster. Because according to that article, the reason they are lightening up is due to such a huge public outcry, mostly older people who can't afford the higher us costs it said, so step up and send in letters explaining your situation, exlaining your pain, explaining your need. At least it will add to their pile of others, and for every one who speaks so many do not, so they have to realize it's a big problem.

Re: U.S. Customs Announcement--Good News

It's not good news so far.... the loop holes that I'm getting hit with are ridiculous...

sigh..

I'm so glad to hear that! That makes so much more sense anyway, to only target the big shipments. I'm very glad for all of you who rely on external sources to be able to get what you need again!
