Guest guest
I am scheduled for the Conserve Plus resurfacing in Vancouver WA with Dr Ed Sparling. I will have no insurance issues but see that many go to Belgium. Is this only because of insurance or is it preferred? Obviously he has more experience in Belgium but is the BHR device any different? I am scheduled for mid March and am a very active 46 year old that want's to contiue to be so only without the limitations now put on me by my current DJD destroyed hip. Dr Sparling also wants me on crutches for six weeks even though he thinks he'll have a hard time keeping me on them because of the lack of pain, etc. Is that what they aske of you in Belgium? Thanks. Guest guest
Todd, Dr. De Smet is probably the second most experienced withe the resurfacing procedure. It is controversial whether the BHR is a better product than the other devices. Dr. De Smet has a great record so far which is why i went to him. It seems Dr. Amatutz was over in Belgium sittin in on his procedures if that tells you anything. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
I had a resurf with Dr De Smet in August. He has you up the day after surgery, putting full weight on the new hip. I was on one crutch by Day 4, flew home on Day 7, think I gave up that one crutch at about week 4. Dr De Smet and the Uk doctors seem to be the ones who want patients to put full weight on, not sure if that is because of the design of the BHR or not, but recovery is very fast. Perhaps you should check on how many resurfs the doc has one, before deciding, because experience really does count - after all you have the rest of your life to live with this new hip, and only the best is good enough, all else being equal (like cost) . Dr DE Smet told me that he only does hips now, no other Orthopaedic surgery, because he believes that it isn't possible to be skilled in all areas and do the best job, so you might want to find out if your doc does only hips or all sorts of other surgery.. There are lots on this site who swear by De Smet, including me, but there are many who have a had a Conserve Plus and are happy with it. If insurance isn't an issue, I would sure be exploring all options, including in the archives here and the websites of Dr De Smet and of the manufacterers of the BHR (Midland Medical Technologies). Good luck with your decision. Sharry RBHR De Smet 27/08/2003 USA vs Belgium, Why? I am scheduled for the Conserve Plus resurfacing in Vancouver WA with Dr Ed Sparling.
