Pernilla,

I was the same as you at 5 1/2 weeks. I was trying to walk

all by myself and couldn't overcome my limp. I was chastized

by someone on this site who told me to stop being stubborn and

use the cane to practice walking normal until you gain enough

strength to walk without a limp without the cane.

That's just what I did and it works. I practiced walking using

the cane to keep my back straight and my gait normal. I also

walked in a pool that was 4 feet deep without a cane. After

a while (2 - 3 months), I lost the cane and the limp was gone

accept when I was tired and had walked alot. Now my wife and

others remark to me that they don't see a limp.

A bit of advice: walk with a cane until you can do so without a limp. It will

come--don't force it. Don't let the limp become a " mental " habit.

HiI'm 5½ weeks postop and doing pretty well. The pain and soarness in

the thigh muscles are gone and I walk around the house without chruches,

outside I use one. Now to my question; I limp to the point where my lower

back is giving me some trouble. I have some pain and I'm very 'tired' in my

back. Has anyone experienced the same and about when does one stop walking

like a duck from side to side???Besides that I don't have anything to

complain about and I'm looking forward to seeing my OS on monday.Best

Dear Pernilla,

I can only echo Jeff’s e-mail to you. I am now 81/2 weeks post op.

Like you, without a cane I walk with a limp. But I wouldn’t dream of

walking very often without one can (cane on unoperated side to give

support to operated side), except for very short distances around the

house. Like Jeff said, the cane or in my case, the crutch, helps you

to walk ‘normally’ and not put stress on your back. I think we try to

do too much too soon. I also have a good physiotherapist who helps me

to try to walk ‘normally’---not using my back muscles. One has to

relearn, particularly if we have been walking incorrectly for many

years. And our muscles have to slowly build up strength again.

Hello Pernilla,

The limping can take around 6 months, this is what happened to me.

I had my operation June 27 in Belgium and when I was at my 6 weeks

control with dr Koen De Smet, I asked him about the limping, because

I was worried about that. He said: try to stand on your operated leg and

I found out that I did not have the strenght to do that. My muscles were

not strong enough. And that's exactly the reason why you are limping.

I am now nearly 7 months postop and had physio from August. I had a

physio test last friday and was excited to hear that my operated leg IS

STRONGER than the " good one " . And my limping has disappeared!

I could stop my physiotraining and feel like I succeeded an examination!!

So Pernilla, the limping is temporary. So training your muscles is the only

thing you should to and be patient. Good luck!

Ria,

limp

Hi

I'm 5½ weeks postop and doing pretty well. The pain and soarness in

the thigh muscles are gone and I walk around the house without

chruches, outside I use one. Now to my question; I limp to the point

where my lower back is giving me some trouble. I have some pain and

I'm very 'tired' in my back. Has anyone experienced the same and

about when does one stop walking like a duck from side to side???

Besides that I don't have anything to complain about and I'm looking

forward to seeing my OS on monday.

Best regards
