Guest guest
Michele, From one here who did not have it all out the first time--I'm glad to hear that you are. If you have so many cold nodules throughout your gland, it really is the best thing. Cancer or not, that thyroid gland of yours is never going to get any better. I'm glad they are taking it all out. Guest guest
Hi, You guys have been so supportive, and I'm starting to feel like I'm " home " now when I come to the thyca site. Right now, I need to be " home " . After the docs finished with all of their testing they decided we needed to take ALL of my thyroid out in one fell swoop. I was shocked to hear that bit of news, because I expected to at least have 1/2 of a functioning thyroid left! I thought they were just going to take out the large nodules! I met with my endo on Tuesday to discuss my tests and he didn't say a word about taking the entire thyroid. Then I saw the surgeon on Wednesday and we had been talking in reference to only taking part of it, until he received my lab tests from my endo....and when he came back into the room he said, " I looked at your reports and I agree with Dr. Berger that we need to take the whole thyroid. " I asked him why they had to take it all, and he said that my thyroid has so many cold nodules that they couldn't biopsy all of them so it's best to take it out, just to be sure of what we're dealing with. Well, we won't be dealing with much of anything if they take it ALL OUT! I still have not had an absolute diagnosis of thyca and I'm really scared now about this whole thing.....sitting here crying as I write. I hate to sound like such a big baby, but that's just how I feel. I'm angry. And still...very afraid. For those of you praying folks out there, please pass one up to the Big Guy for me. I'd really appreciate it. And for those others who are in the middle of surgery, hypoville, RAI, etc. I'll say a little prayer for you, too. Thanks for listening, Michele
Guest guest
Michele~ Sorry you are so upset! It is understandable. I had my entire thyroid removed on May 5th of this year, and then 11 days ago had all the lymph nodes in my neck removed. Needless to say, all both these surgeries did not come at appropriate times for me, but I go through them and will get through the next part. You will get through this, and will look back say it wasn't so bad. I'm not saying I want to go through it again, but it was tolerable; I can think of worse things to have operated on! Know that I will put you in my prayers. Good luck with the next steps. Guest guest
Michele, I went through the same thing. Try to be glad that they want to take it all out. If they don't take it out, you always will be worried about the other nodules. In my case, it ended up being cancer but they didn't know that for sure until they took the whole thyroid out and tested it. If I can do it--and I am the hugest coward!!--you can do it. ----Jan in Ohio

Guest guest
Michele, Cold nodules are generally an indication of thyca whether biopsied or not. A total thyroidectomy is generally an appropriate course for thyca. Routine follow up afterwards is more accurate when the entire thyroid has been removed paticularly with a multinodule goiter. Once you have your RAI you will be followed with routine blood tests and scans to monitor for recurrence. If only one lobe of the thyroid was removed those blood tests would not be accurate. You do have the option, however, of insisting on a frozen section in the operating room before the second lobe is removed. However, keep in mind, frozen sections do not always diagnose thyca and only 4 days later in full pathology does the diagnosis come in. At that point, you would have to return for a second surgery. That has happened to many of us. If your worry is about losing your thyroid well then you have a huge list of people to talk to who have done that and are doing fine, living a productive and happy life. If the worry is about cancer it is a normal fear,we've all gone through that also. Only with time will you be able to deal with it and not think the worst. I am confident that no matter the outcome of your surgery, you will be fine. Guest guest
, I will defently say a prayer for you . But take it from someone who had to turn around and go back and have the other half taken out three days after the first half was taken let them get it all now . It will save you time and keep you from having to turn around and have another operation on top of your first one . I wish they had taken out all mine the first time around . I know you will do fine though . I will be praying for you ,God bless.
