Guest guest
Verl there is all sorts of information in the files and links section of this site - you will find information on doctors (Europe and US and Australia and Canada) and the different devices. There is more information there than anywhere else .... our doctor in Canada said we actually knew more about resurfacing than he did by the time we saw him!!! Good luck - you will be able to ride again. Pamela > I am a 59 year old coach and I am in pretty good shape except for > two worn out hips. I am researching hip resurfacing. Guest guest
Check out this link to a Blue Cross sight discussing hip resurfacing. http://www.regence.com/trgmedpol/surgery/sur113.html I had my hip resurfaced 5 weeks ago and my insurance paid for it. You may want to go to www.wmt.com Medical Technolgy and you can do a search for physicians in your area who are doing hip resurfacing using the " Conserve " which is their hardware. > I am a 59 year old coach and I am in pretty good shape except for > two worn out hips. Guest guest
Hi, If you take a look not far back into the archives you will find reference to an Indian Surgeon..... Someone posted only a few weeks back about their great experience flying to India and having him do their hip resurface........ I have no idea what part of India he practices in.......... but he is the only one I have seen reference too here as far as experience goes...... If you want more specific information you will have to contact the various manufacturers Corin and Birmingham via their web sites and ask for a list of surgeons they supply their prothesis too in your area....... These coys will happily supply these......... Guest guest
We have heard some good reports on Dr. Vijay C. Bose of the Apollo speciality Hospitals-Chennai, India. I have no idea how far that is from your place. He is personally trained by McMinn and has also very good contacts with Dr.DeSmet. See also www.hipresurfacingindia.com An experienced resurfacing doc can say in the majority of the cases from x-rays whether you are a good resurfacing candidate or not. If he can't, either you are a difficult case, or he is missing the experience. If the femoral head is flatten, it shouldn't be a problem for resurfacing. If the head is collapsed, then it will be hard to do a resurface job. Guest guest
Does AVN continue to progress under the hip resurfacing implant? We are looking at this procedure for our 20 year old son who has bilateral AVN from steroids 2 years ago for leukemia. His father is concerned that if the bone continues to deteriorate, the implant will loosen, requiring more surgery. At what stage of disease is the resurfacing done? Thank you for your help. Guest guest
> convential wisdom says the earlier, the better . People w early stage I or II (where the head has not started to collapse ) AVN are likely to have better outcomes from what i've read . i believe that prior to resurfacing , the dying portion of the head can be removed and the disease does not progress after resurfacing ....this is the optimistic view of resurfacing for patients w AVN . AVN does not exclude a resurface operation , but makes it more complicated than a resurface for simple OArthritis. Many others contributing to this site , can provide better first hand knowledge of resurfacing for AVN . Goldberg C+ , 1/28/03 Does AVN continue to progress under the hip resurfacing implant? Guest guest
Hallo , i m a ORL doctor in germ.. here are 50 Kliniken in Germany where resurfacing doing. 4-5 Kliniken are specialized. The spezialisten have 500 or 300-400 operated. It is comming in europe. More and more kliniks are for the young people make resurfacing. I have an accident with ski and broken the neck of hip. Now it is an AVN. i will operating with resurfacing. Gunnar Kroker Re: Hip resurfacing Hi: I am also a radiologist and I agree with the medical comments. However, other orthopedic surgeons in the US and elsewhere in Europe and Australia have had excellent results. My left hip degenerated in only three years with complete loss of cartilage. Dr. Vail had no concern about the procedure. He told me that the principal problem is related to the diameter of the femoral neck. It is adequate in most men but can be difficult in small framed women who are somewhat greater risk of post op fracture. The main problem in the US has been insurance coverage. I had my Surgery at Duke (Dr. Vail 3/31/03 and was home in 2 days, back to work on day 17. Duke gave me a 15% discount for cash. I also negotiated an an additional discount for the physician charges. This ultimately resulted in a final cost to me of about $21,000 BUT WAIT!!! I fought the insurance company administrator at all levels including review by the NC insurance commissioner and LOST. BUT WAIT!!! They (BCBS of NC) were not the real insurer. I made multiple complaints through my group (THE NORTH CAROLINA MEDICAL SOCIETY) and they investigated further. Finally the advisory board to the real insurance company agreed to cover me. I have now been partly reimbursed through a complicated process and ultimately my cost will be around $3-4,000). The process is still ongoing (almost a year later). I only traveled a 75 minute drive from my house to have the procedure done. I'm going skiing in Colorado Feb 20th (& celebrating my 59th birthday). The C+ or the Cormet will probably be approved in the US in the next year or so. Once that occurs the others will quickly be approved and the insurance companies will pay. Canada will soon follow. Many insurers in the US are paying for the procedure. Any of the orthopedists who are doing resurfacing now are satisfactory. DeSmet is fine but he can't be the only operating surgeon for the whole world. This procedure is not mystical. Tons of other devices have gone through the same process and are now routinely used everywhere. So find a resurfacing orthopedist and go for it! in North Carolina > > I have been diagnosed with the following a year ago: > > > > Right Hip: " There is quitemarked degenerative change of the hip with > > joint space narrowing, sclerosis of the articular margins and > > subchondral cyst formation within the femoral head. Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad to hear that your perseverence has paid off! Unfortunately NHS systems in place elsewhere have wait lists that put outcomes at significant risk simply thru delay. Your experience in the medical triangle is by no means universal. My state ortho society took over a month to even reply, then left a message to call back later when they were less busy. My local OS group took a week to tell me they had no idea what I was talking about. Calls regionally met with similar results. Dr De Smet encouraged me with a personal reply to my initial inquiry in all of 6 hours. I had similar fast responses from Australia and the UK, but not from anyone here in the US. My bilat BHR will cost about what your uni did, and no one at the time I did my research would even consider doing both hips at the same time. I had an terrific experience in Belgium, made some new friends and was again reminded that the rest of the world is a pretty amazing place! I was there and back in 11 days and could go back to work tomorrow, but I'll reunite with my family awhile longer first. I'm solo, individually insured without the protection that even small group's offer. My knee osteotomies cost me with denials and subsequent rate hikes and my hips will cost me even more, so much in fact that I might be better off not even filing a claim! The insurance environment here in Iowa where IC Corporate HQ's are plentiful and the state gets their insurance from them may be a little less friendly than yours, or not. Your message to " hang in there " is a most valuable one. In the here and now, reimbursement remains a major consideration, especially before the FDA gets around to it's eventual ruling. Clearly no one on the decision making panel needs new hips! Your advice to get definitive care asap is also dead on! However, I disagree emphatically that all OS's are satisfactory or even close to the same difference. IMHO it's most important to get hooked up with someone who has done more than two of these on a pig! That said, your experience was obviously a good one and should serve as a rally point for people in your area and circumstance. Stay wary of those " look tame at the top " black diamond trails and stay safe! Happy soon to be 59th birthday. I'll be 57 soon after. I think we're both wearing it pretty well! Take extremely good care! My very best wishes, Steve Vince Bilat BHR De Smet Jan 6, 2004 > > > I have been diagnosed with the following a year ago: > > > > > > Right Hip: " There is quitemarked degenerative change of the hip > with > > > joint space narrowing, sclerosis of the articular margins and > > > subchondral cyst formation within the femoral head. Guest guest
this sounds almost identical to my own xray evaluation. I had my right hip resurfaced by Dr. De Smet, with no problem at all. I had it done for around $12,000. The six sessions of physical therapy I had here in the states afterwards cost me more than my plane fare from San Francisco to Brussels (and i do have health insurance, believe it or not.) I too am fed up with the medical system here. I recommend going out of the country unless your insurance company agrees to pay.
