Guest guest
Louise: I had lap RNY the same day as you. I came home Friday (for some reason all patients require a 3 night stay). I was wondering about ALL the rumbling.. I thought it was just me. ha ha. I thought maybe something was wrong. It's pretty constant!!! I do have a question for you, though. Do you have a JP drain? I have to change the dressings like twice a day cuz it kinda soaks through.... but it's not draining much into the bulb (maybe 10cc per day). Maybe the drain is plugged? Plus, that is the only site that is still really sore to touch, etc. I am going to call the doc tomorrow cuz I'm worried. I mean, they told me to check for any foul odor and there isn't any, but it's bleeding somewhat still. I don't know if that's normal cuz I was REALLY out of it in the hospital and didn't want to " look " if you know what I mean. They took out the staples right before I left. Am I worrying too much or is this abnormal? Anyone know? When i take off the dressing to change it, it starts to drip/bleed from the site. It's not really swollen or yellow/pus or anything like that.. I'm just scared. Anyone have any advice or knowledge of this, would really really appreciate it. I don't know how long it's going to take my doc to call back on a Sunday! Thanks for all your help. Hope you are doing well. Wow, the mall???? You are good? I'm not up for that yet, although, I do feel like walking, I don't want people to see me with no makeup, hair not done, and this drain hanging out of my clothes. I don't have the energy yet. I am so glad you do, that's great, sounds like you are doing really well so far. What are you drinking? I have been having like 1oz of boost plus protein 3-4 times per day plus 1oz of broth a few times a day, and trying to get water in, but it's hard. I feel SO full all the time. Thanks for your advice. , IL update/Louise > > Hi Folks, > Well it has now been 5 whole days since my surgery (Tues., 21st), came home > on Thursday and am so thrilled to report I actually went to the Mall > yesterday! Guest guest
Thank you so much . I don't like the boost and I have protein powders from Vitalady that I ordered.. but the nutritionist @ the hospital says we have to be on boost for the first week only? Don't know why. I was just worried about all the blood/drainage on the dressings. I was worried there was a blockage. Same with the wick thing on the other side. It bleeds a lot, and seems to be opening rather than closing. when I re pack it, it seems to get worse. I'm a nervous nelly. Thanks again for all your re-assurances. I appreciate it a lot, will help me sleep tonight. update/Louise > > > > > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > Well it has now been 5 whole days since my surgery (Tues., 21st), came > > home > > > on Thursday and am so thrilled to report I actually went to the Mall > > > yesterday! Guest guest
I had a Pratt drain and they can be annoying but the drainage is normal as long as it is not foul smelling and there is not a lot of redness swelling or pus present it will be Ok just keep it clean and dry as instructed . I had mine for a week and it got so sore before time to remove it and it sounds like you are not draining much from what you said about 10 cc in the bulb . The rumbling is all normal to for a newbie . OH and last but not least you might want to get some real protein the boost has lots of sugar in it and that is not good and might make you dump too ! update/Louise > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > Well it has now been 5 whole days since my surgery (Tues., 21st), came > home > > on Thursday and am so thrilled to report I actually went to the Mall > > yesterday! Guest guest
, Take the tubing from the drain, and gently pull on it, from the top to the bottom, this is called stripping the drain. If there is anything else to come out that will help. I have 2 JP's since Dec 11, and will have them while my leak is healing. Deb also an operating room nurse. Guest guest
Thanks Deb I forgot to tell her about stripping it now we have her covered *who hates JP drains* Re: update/Louise > , > > Take the tubing from the drain, and gently pull on it, from the top to the bottom, this is called stripping the drain. Guest guest
The wick is supposed to do that, that's why it's there, and that's how it works. Drainage is fine. If the dressing is saturated then I would tell your doc, and only if it's bright red. You are going to have some pinkish drainage. Guest guest
The nutritionist doesn't understand about us WLS patients, even if she's " prescribed " for WLS patients for ages and ages. The sugar and the milk in boost can make you feel yucky. You already feel yucky enough with the residuals of the surgery - you don't need more help <G>. Guest guest
Thanks so much you guys! I called my surgeon @ 6am this morning.. had him paged. I was concerned. The dressing on the tube thing is red and pink. Maybe 1/2 oz of blood on it. pretty saturated. He just called me back finally. Well, his associate did... and he is VERY nice. He told me it was normal. Told me also about the " milking " or " stripping " of the tube. I have tried that, but nothing happens. I am still pretty scared, but he said it was normal. I would just feel better if it stopped bleeding and hurting. He said the tube is way in there, and sometimes the drainage takes the " path of least resistance..... which means the opening rather than going into the tube. He said drainage of any kind is much much better than NO drainage at this point. Or yellow or smelly. That would signal infection. He told me to call anytime if I was still concerned. He was very nice. Thank you Deb for your advice. I feel better knowing you all are here to support and give advice. Thanks for being so quick about it too. You got back to me lots quicker than he even did. ) I also asked him cuz my ankles are kinda swollen. He said that too is normal after any surgery. It will go away. phew. I'm so itchy from all the tape, etc. I can't wait to get this drain out. I might feel halfway normal again. I bet that thing is gonna hurt coming out too! I'll take a shot of my liquid vicodin before going to that appointment. ha ha. Thanks again!!!! Re: update/Louise > The wick is supposed to do that, that's why it's there, and that's how it works. Guest guest
I stopped drinking the boost last night and I feel 100 times better already. My tummy isn't rumbling and moving around so much today. Not nearly as much gas that has NO WHERE to go but sit there and cause me pain. I'm having a hard time finding other things to " drink " . I tried one of the protein powders. eeewww, maybe I didn't make it right. I know it's not supposed to taste great, but bleh. I've been drinking a lot of water and REALLY watered down apple juice, some chicken broth... but that's about it. I've only been home 2 days, but I can't find much toeat . I know I have to--- but I'm not even hungry. This is harder than I thought. Thanks for all your help. update/Louise > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > > Well it has now been 5 whole days since my surgery (Tues., 21st), > came > > > home > > > > on Thursday and am so thrilled to report I actually went to the > Mall > > > > yesterday!
