Ha! I'm replying to my own post, because I thought of yet another

related question.

When I was on Sotalol, I read somewhere that I should not take

anything with magnesium in it unless it was at least 2 hours

before or 2 hours after the Sotalol. Is the same thing true for

Toprol XL? I've tried to research this, but I can't find anything

about it.

I'd like to know also, since they start at $45.00 for

24 of them, I just checked this at the local

Drugstore, I was shocked at the prices.

Sotalol:

No pharmacokinetic interactions were observed

with hydrochlorothiazide or warfarin.

Antacids

Administration of BETAPACE AF within 2 hours of

antacids containing aluminum oxide and magnesium

hydroxide should be avoided because it may result

in a reduction in Cmax and AUC of 26% and 20%,

respectively and consequently in a 25% reduction

in the bradycardic effect at rest. Administration

of the antacid two hours after BETAPACEAF has no

effect on the pharmacoki-netics or

pharmacodynamics of sotalol.

I've gone to the web page in question and I've looked at all

three pages ~~~ they all say the same thing. But where do I find

the part about Precautions & Drug Interactions? I can't find it.

(Do I really want to see it?????)

My cardiologist says he doesn't care what I take or eat in

relationshipo to warfarin as long as I do whatever I do consistently.

He can adjust the dosage of the warfarin for any level of other intake.

That's why we check the INR every few weeks. An adjustment of

warfarin will keep the readings where the cardiologist wants them.

That makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is that my

new EP said that the PT/INR tests only measure the effects of

Coumadin or Warfarin ~~ but that other things that might thin

your blood further (like Vitamin E, fish oils, garlic, or certain

herbs) do not show up on the test, so that your blood may

actually be thinner than what the test numbers show, and you

are at risk for undesired bleeding if you take those things.

That seems strange to me, but maybe it's true. I've read what I

can about Coumadin, Warfarin, and the PT/INR test, but that

particular concept has not been addressed in any of my reading.

HCTZ is a diuretic. It is not potassium-sparing, that is, it can also make you

excrete potassium along with excess liquid, so one needs care when taking it.

Hi Steve,

I'm confused. In my orginal post, I mentioned that I took Sotalol

with Warfarin (at the same time) and asked whether it would be

OK for me to take the newly Rx-ed Toprol with Warfarin at the

same time. I don't understand why you answered my question

by bringing up a diuretic that was not Rx-ed for me and that I've

never even heard of. Is it something that I should be taking? No

one has ever mentioned it to me before.

My undertanding is that those things work in different ways and are

independent of each other. For example, warfarin does not dissolve

blood clots and does not really make the blood thinner. It reduces

the blood's ability to form clots. Aspirin does something different

in that it smooths the blood cells so they are not as likely to

stick to the artery walls. Other things operate in different ways

and I've had no warnings against them, only questions as to if I'm

taking enough to be therapeutic.

I too would be interested in knowing if their is any practical

limitation on fish oils, garlic and other " blood thinning "

supplements. I seem to only hear of the positive benefits of them.

Also, if their effect on the blood can be measured.
