Guest guest
Hi! Don't know if we can help, but here goes. My husband also is in need of getting his hip done. We finally have got in to see Dr. Clive Duncan who is known as one of the best in BC as far as I know. We have been told that the surgery is covered under BC Med, but we will have to pay approx. $3000.00 for the parts. This may change in the next year or two, but my husband Mark does not have that long...we have got to get this done. Maybe you should try to get ahold of some of the OS's in the Vancouver area. Good luck...this must be frustrating for you.

Guest guest
Doesn't this just want to make you scream.... You should get an emergency referral to one of the Vancouver OS who do the surgery - Clive Duncan, Greidainus, Bas Masri or Garbuz. They are all doing it now. There is also a Dr. Smit, I think, in White Rock and apparently a couple more how are getting into it. We were not able to claim our hips on BC Med and actually found Colin Hansen himself stubborn and a bit rude and his staff even worse. They wouldn't even admit that it was possible to have paid to see the surgeon, which I did... Another thought there is a specialist referrel clinic in Vancouver and if you like I will dig up the number for it and let you know which doctor will see you there. You can get in quickly - you bypass the long wait for the consult but still have to wait for surgery. However, because the doctors are beginning to do more of this I hear they fast tracking some of the resurfacing candidates. If all else fails and you can swing it, we would highly recommend going to Belgium. YOu will be talk to Koen immediately and have your surgery wthin a couple of months and be back farming very quickly. I can fill you in on this if you want. Guest guest
Thanks , Where is Dr Duncan? I would like to contact their office to see how they managed to have the surgery covered. Maybe, just maybe Ken can have the procedure done in Alberta because he has already been referred there.. Thanks again! Sandy Kirtzinger Re: BC Medical and Hip Resurfacing - a challenge Hi! Guest guest
Well, my husband contacted our GP in Dawson Creek to find that BC does pay for the procedure (minus the parts) as suggested. I'm not sure why they didn 't know this information a year ago when Ken first asked about resurfacing. We had to find a surgeon who was doing the procedure in Canada and ask for the referral. That office didn't seem to do much research! Now for hurdle #2 - the appointment and surgery. Will keep you posted. I'm also going to contact our extended provider (Sun Life) to see if they will pay for the parts or if they will pay for the procedure in Alberta, which could be done within a month in a private clinic. Take care and thanks again so very much for the information. I'm not sure why the BC Medical people told me that the procedure wasn't covered at all! Guest guest
Sandy Some surgeons will skip the appointment, they only need to see the xrays, which you can get done at your local hospital and then fedex to the surgeon. It doesn't hurt to ask, and it could save you a lotof time and expense. I kknow Dr Kim in Ottawa only asks for the xrays and you just show up for surgery on the appointed day, so.....he may not be the only one. Sharry Re: BC Medical and Hip Resurfacing - a challenge Hi!
