Mine seemed to be triggered by the pregnancy. I had all kinds of symptoms and allergies develop at that time. It may have been there before, but the symptoms weren't so severe that I noticed. It became VERY obvious about a year after my son was born....and ignored for 14+ years. At least you have the awareness that it could happen!

I believe I have had CD most of my life, however after the birth of my

2nd child is when my major symptoms started. From the time she was 5

months old until she was 3 I was hospitalized for a week or two every

couple months. Prior to that I had issues that I believe were Celiac

related but never that sick. I have read (do not know how much truth

there is to it) that extreemly stressful situations can bring out CD.

Might have been my case, the father of my children and I had seperated

at the begining of my pregancy and I was a single mom (only 22 myself)

with 2 kids under the age of 3, trying to keep it together while at the

same time morning the breakup of my family.

First of all, congratulations :)

My onset of symptoms started after the birth of my second child.  Although some in my family will tell you I was crabby right after she was born, I believe it was the surgery (tubal litagation - medical issue) I had when she was a year old.  I swear when I woke up in delivery I knew something was wrong, but contributed it to complications without having any idea of what CD was.  The surgery was in August, I was diagnosed the following April.  I was diagnosed not with GI symptoms, but with joint pain and mood swings (like any new mom doesn't have those?!?!?!).

Good luck and we are here for you :)

Okay, three things...

Number 1: Congratulations!

Number 2: I have only been recently diagnosed. I believe that I

have been having symptoms since my 2nd pregnancy. My daughter is

now 18 months old, so for the last 2 years or so. It was a much

rockier pregnancy than my first. Lots more discomfort, mood swings,

etc. Then, ever since she was born I have been telling my husband

that my hormones must have gotten knocked out of whack or

something. PMS symptoms and mood swings like you would not

believe. He had to leave the house sometimes to escape ;) Then,

last November, we took a family trip to Mexico. My daughter and I

have been having horrible GI symptoms ever since. My doctor

suspected Celiac and Parasite for both of us. My daughter is too

young for the blood test, but my son and I both tested positive.

We're still trying to nail down whatever critter might also be

involved. So, long story short (too late, ha ha), second pregnancy -

definitely. Isn't it interesting that so many seem to have that

answer? Hmmmm....

Number 3: I had a talk with the doctor about my son when we were

diagnosed. We were talking about the fact that my son has been

lactose intolerant since birth. He had a very hard time nursing

until we figured out that he was allergic to the dairy that I was

eating and drinking. The doc said that I could have passed along

the anti-gliadin antibodies in my milk also. I have seen

discussions about passing along gluten, but this was the first I had

heard about passing along the antibodies. He said that if I plan to

have another baby that I should make sure I am GF throughout the

pregnancy and throughout breastfeeding (which I would be anyway, bc

of the CD).

Okay, I lied. There's four things:

Number 4: Are you sure you're not at least gluten sensitive? I know

that ever since I found out about " the hidden epidemic " I have CD on

the brain and tend to see it everywhere. But you have a son with

CD, a related autoimmune condition, and the tests are notorious for

false negatives. Just a thought, forgive me if I'm sticking my nose

in too far.

First off, Congratulations! May you have a trouble free, peaceful, energetic

pregnancy!

My obvious CD symptoms began at about 36 weeks pregnant with my 8th child. At

first I confused it with some end of pregnancy " clearing out " of my digestive

tract...which has been a common pre labor symptom for me. But as time went on

and my baby ended up being 2 weeks late and I began to experience fatigue above

and beyond the normal end of pregnancy stuff, I began to realize something was

not quite right. When my baby was about 2 weeks old, I visited my doctor for

help. I had experienced the " big D " daily for 2 months along with other symptoms

and felt horrible. Tests were run that were inconclusive and I was told it was

" IBS " . I was not tested for celiac. I tired the various IBS suggestions like " no

milk " and " low fat " with no change in symptoms. I gave up and coped.

Fast forward almost 2 years. I gave birth to my 9th child. I still had the same

horrible symptoms. This baby had severe food allergies. I had to drastically

alter my diet in order to breastfeed him. There were no other options...he

reacted to all hypoallergenic and elemental formulas. I knew of the milk and soy

allergies from his initial diagnosis but he was still having reactions despite

the complete elimination of those foods. Since allergy testing is notoriously

inaccurate, especially in babies, the discovering of those allergens was up to

me (under supervision of the allergist)... by trial and error. Very long story

short, I eliminated all foods but rice for several days until I got my infant

symptom free. Then I added in one food at a time as I checked for reactions. We

quickly built up a repertoire of " safe " foods. During this process, my GI

symptoms suddenly disappeared. Gone, totally and completely. When I tried wheat,

I was immediately sick again. Same with oats and rye.... I never tried barley.

Since I was still breastfeeding my son and wheat caused a reaction in him, I

continued to avoid it. I detailed my journey for my doctor and she did order a

celiac panel. It came back negative.....of course....since I had already been

gluten free for 5 months. I do not see the value for myself in returning to

gluten for the benefit of a confirmed diagnosis. My doc says if you feel better

w/o gluten, you should not eat it. I just cannot spare the time to be horribly

ill for several weeks/months. I'm a very busy mom.

Seven weeks ago, I gave birth again to my 10th child. The pregnancy/labor/birth

was loads easier than the previous 2. I had more energy, strength and stamina.

What a difference!

In hindsight, I think I did have some celiac symptoms prior to the onset of the

life altering GI symptoms in my 8th pregnancy. I just didn't recognize them as

such.
