So far she's not discouraged, but I can see the potential for discouragement. Bette
Guest guest
You know I was just reading an article last night in the most current issue of Runner's World about the physiological makeup of men and women and how it effects their athletic performance and weight loss efforts. It was very interesting. Basically, (and this is VERY basic) the hormone estrogen causes women to " hold onto " fat stores, while men's hormones allow them to build muscle easily and get rid of fat. This causes us women issues when we want to lose. However, my WW leader has said in the past (and she's been a leader since the early 80s) that although men tend to lose more weight more quickly than women, in the long run, their weight loss efforts even out and both have about the same success with keeping the weight off. On a side note, it appears that the reason women do better at really long distance runs (like ultramarathons of over 100 miles) is because our hormones allow us to use more of our fat as fuel, while guys have a harder time of this and end up " bonking " before the finish line. The magazine used the example of last year's Badwater Ultra where the participants ran 135 miles. A 43-year-old woman whipped the pants off the guy that came in second place. You hardly ever hear of that in the shorter races (including marathons, although I have a hard time calling them short!). Guest guest
<>I've noticed that men seem to be a lot more successful at losing weight than women do<> Boy is this the truth! My dh broke his ankle a few years back and actually lost weight sitting in one place for 6 weeks, while I was running like a crazy person and gained 2lbs! Ugh. In the weight loss game, men definitely have an advantage!
Guest guest
I think it depends on the person. Men tend ot have more muscle mass so they burn more calories. However, Roy has lost weight WAY slower than I have. He just hasn't been as dedicated to staying on program. If you stay on program every day, exercise every day, the weight will come off regardless of gender. > Re: Husbands and Wives > > > In a message dated 6/15/2004 7:10:23 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > rscrawford@... writes: > I've noticed that men seem to be a lot more successful at > losing weight > than women do > > - This really does seem to be true.
