Guest guest
- I am scheduled for a resurface in Feb. Dr De Smet charges 10500 euros for an uncomplicated unilateral. With the dollar falling as we speak you can expect to pay about 1/3 more than this time last year. Thanks Gray FAX newtl@... Guest guest
Hi , In june 2003 the costs of a BHR operation were 8500 EURO, being 7500 for hospital + prothesis and 1000 EURO for De Smet's surgery. You get a estimate at your consult with De Smet. De Smet is a fantastic surgeon. My life has been changed! On New-Year's eve I danced for hours between 8 and 2 in the night without pain, just tired feet and on Januari 1 I walked a new record: 6 kms (4 miles). Life is so good with my new hip..... May all the old and new hippies have the same good feeling in 2004! Good luck, , go for it! Guest guest
Hi, I have arthritis in the left hip and am scheduled to have a resurface the end of Jan. However I am very concerned that my op on the NHS will be carried out by an inexperienced registrar and not the consultant, who told me that he would be there but just supervising as it is a teaching hospital. I have not met the registrar and no one can tell me how many resurfacings he has done previously. I am very unsure and wonder if I should go private and visit Dr. Smet in Belgium. What would you do? Guest guest
I don't know how old you are , your condition or what your activity level is--but all I can tell you is this. I considered that the QUALITY of my life was at stake. You must be comfortable with your decision. For me it was none other than Dr De Smet. I wanted his expertise. Because possibly there could be no turning back. Money or insurance coverage was no longer a consideration for me. Good luck. Guest guest
I have just returned from Belgium - hip surgery on Dec. 17th. I would go back to Belgium, to Dr. De Smet for twice the price! I had no post-op pain and started walking without crutches two weeks after surgery. Dr. De Smet has done almost 1000 resurfacings and he has the hands of a magician! Guest guest
My insurance required me to get pre-approval to have surgery as there are no PPO OS's in my plan. (I'm in Wa State). Now that it's over, and the bills are coming in, they claim my OS is a non-PPO, so won't pay 20% ( about $6000) -so if I'd have gone to DeSmet, and the same held, I'd likewise pay 20% (about $2000). It would seem our system is $ encouraging me to go out of country. Consider ALL your options. --------------- Subject: Un-American?? A car company can move its factories to Mexico and claim it's a free market. A toy company can outsource to a Chinese subcontractor and claim it's a free market. A major bank can incorporate in Bermuda to avoid taxes and claim it's a free market We can buy HP Printers made in Mexico. We can buy shirts made in Bangladesh. We can purchase almost anything we want from many different countries BUT, heaven help the elderly who dare to buy their prescription drugs from Canada (Or Mexico) pharmacy. That's called un-American! And you think the pharmaceutical companies don't have a powerful lobby? Think again!
Guest guest
Rosemary, Before my resurf in Belgium I researched UK consultants. Most qualified ones (trained in BHR) have done a fraction of the operations carried out by Dr de Smet or by mssrs McMinn and Treacy. My local (Croydon, UYK) consultant would not tell me how many he had carried out. I looked on it as if I was entrusting my prized Ferrari car to a once in a lifetime mechanical operation. Which mechanic should I choose? An experienced one that I trusted. I did not trust the lesser experienced UK surgeons to carry out the operation, and certainly not in a supervising role. I wanted full engagement, no less. I went to Belgium. I'm going back there for number 2. I'd counsel you to do likewise. Chris. (2nd BHR scheduled Jan 6th, Dr de Smet. > I don't know how old you are , your condition or what your activity level is--but all I can tell you is this. Guest guest
Hi Rosemary! If you don't get good information in the NHS and you are not sure if you make the right decision, go to dr Koen de Smet in Belgium! Then you are sure he is one of the best and most experienced surgeons you can get in the world. Many of this group did the same, just like me. I also had the feeling that in my country, the Netherlands, was not the operation I needed and went for a second opion to Gent. There is no problem to do that! It's your body and your life that's important. So don't hesitate, GO! Wish you good luck and let us know what you do.
