After surgery I need to travel by air 3000 Km, approximately 12 Hours. Please tell me from your expirience, whether I will be fit to travel by Air, after 8 days off Surgery. Dear Sharma: Standard instructions for flying after resurfacing require you to wait at least ten to fourteen days post-surgery. This is primarily because of the risk of blood clotting at high altitude. Your ability to manage the flight physically is a separate issue, and will depend on your physical strength. It is not a comfortable experience to maneuver through airports, etc., although you will no doubt ask for wheelchair assistance. I have had bilateral resurfacing. After the first one, I waited about 20 days post-op, and after the second, 17 days. I wouldn't have wanted to fly in less than that, and I am in pretty good shape. Granted, I flew from England to California, which is much more than 3,000 km., but once you're on the plane, it matters less how long the flight is if you're comfortable. In economy class, I can guarantee you won't be all that comfortable. This operation is no cakewalk, no matter what shape you're in. From all the posts, you can tell how excited everyone is about their results. That should not affect the impression that this is major surgery, and you need to give your body a chance to recover somewhat before taking a long flight. This is primarily because ///////////////// I had my resurface Apollo Chennai 11/8/03 Dr. Bose did a great job for me you will like Dr. Bose he is a very caring man and is committed to his work, he has been doing the resurfacing since it started in Birmingham UK. One bit of advice take some of your favourite snacks with you, while the food is plentiful and cooked well you will no doubt need a little treat occasionally, there is very little selection in Chennai, they do not go for western snacks probably why their teeth are so well preserved. All the best with your operation not that you need it, you will be in the best hands in Chennai. take advantage of the private nursing it costs very little and you will get pampered that bit more which is nice especially the first couple of days after the operation, and they are such lovely girls kind and considerate. All the best C. Parry
Guest guest
Dear Members, I am going to Madras mid January-2004, (Chennai) India, for resurfacing surgery. After surgery I need to travel by air 3000 Km, approximately 12 Hours. Please tell me from your experience, whether I will be fit to travel by Air, after 8 days off Surgery. Thanks, Sharma ////////////// Very sorry I did not give you the information on the one thing you asked about, the long flight. Do not do what I did take the direct route, make sure your covered for thrombosis with anti coagulants, move around as much as possible and pump your ankles, stand every twenty minutes or so. Do not expect help from the air attendants you will have to spell out exactly what help you need then you will find the majority very helpful, and do not fail to explain about your operation then they will understand, they have many passengers with mobility problems. Guest guest
I had a resurfacing by Dr. De Smet and I traveled 7 days later by myself. It was no problem. I had a backpack and a fanny belt which helped immensely. JB

Had other hip resurfaced and trip back was uncomfortable...especially getting out and going to bathroom with walker and husband's help. Lived in one story then. diane
