Experts say that approximately 30% of WLS patients have suffered " addiction

transfer " and transferred their food addiction to some other addiction form such

as drinking, drugs, shopping or promiscuous behavior. I have always said that

food is my addiction of choice. I don't drink, never even experimented with

drugs in college or anything, not fond of shopping cause I don't like crowds,

don't smoke..... But, like Shauna always says on this board, WLS patients

should have therapy and should continue therapy. This is a major life change and

clearly the weight came on so signficantly for some reason. If we don't deal

with the reason, we most certainly could replace the weight with some other

" comfort " . I wish Oprah showed a more balanced program and included successful

WLS patients who weren't dealing with emotional richochet...primarily because a

large population of the country treat Oprah like Ghandi, and anything that Oprah

says is gospel. So I wish she took on the

responsibility of showing a more balances picture of the procedure. But hey, if

the number of patients goes down drastically, I'll get a surgery date sooner.

Whoo Hoo! Silver lining baby!

Re: Oprah

I don't have a spouse does that mean I won't be able to experience

the sleeping around?

I used to drink quite a lot during my early 20s almost 20 years ago.

I rarely drink now. I don't see this as a problem.

I've never taken any drugs other than prescriptions and have never

abused them. I dislike drugs and the feeling(s) I experience when

taking them.

Did Oprah have a source or was it her vast clinical experience she

was referencing?

Permit me to be picky and take issue with something for a minute:

" But, like Shauna always says on this board, WLS patients should have

therapy and should continue therapy. "

I disagree in that I would say ANYONE with addictions should have

therapy and should continue therapy. I know I'm beating this issue to

death but it's not the WLS that causes addiction transfers or even

addictions. It's the addictions one has that cause the need for wls

in the first place.

For the life of me I can't figure out how wls got tied in with

addictions. I've had to struggle with a food addiction all my life

and will have to continue to for the rest of it. WLS isn't going to

help or hinder my addiction or the possibility of me transferring to

another addiction. I'd really like to hear about any other kind of

surgery that cures an addiction because I was never told wls would

cure any for me.

You are interpreting what I'm saying, rather than simply reading what I'm

saying. I never stated that wls cures addictions. I was talking about a show

regarding dangerous addictive behaviour that came about in wls patients. That is

very specific.

I hadn't intended to imply/interpret what YOU were saying. It's my

opinion that this is what Oprah and other sensationalists do/say.

The dangerous addictive behavious in that show that you're talking

about occur in non-wls patients too. I do not believe that these

dangerous addictive behaviours " came about " BECAUSE of wls. I have

yet to hear/read any thing/data on how wls itself is the specific

cause for addictive behaviours (dangerous or otherwise).

GEEZ, MIKE.....you took the words right out of my mouth.

It's all about ratings. The title of the show is not necessarily the

same as the content of the show

Everyone is going to have to keep in mind a couple of things. First of all

everyone is intitled to their own opinion. Including Oprah and people have to

remember to think for themselves when it comes to watching shows like this. I

say that people should have therapy or counseling or group of some kind because

it is a huge mental change and we couldn't lose the weight on our own and it is

my opinion that the mental is going to be even harder in my own experience and

that which I have seen experienced. There are a thousand reasons out there that

people gain weight and that includes OPRAH! it is a matter of getting to a point

where you can catch it and get it under control. Until I feel I can do that, I

will be in therapy, I go to therapy for more reasons then just weight. It all

leads to one thing, managing life. Personally, I have a hard time dealing with

the stressers of my life. The moment I feel old past issues coming up I freak

that my life is going to go backwards and I

turn to food... I am working really hard to change that... but for me there is

SOOO much baggage that came along with my losing this weight personally.

It is again my opinion that food is just as an addiction as drugs and alcohol,

if you think about it, it all draws back to the same behaviors. Such as, hiding

food, being sneaky about how much I eat and how often, spending sooo much more

money on food then I NEED, building my whole day around it. I would like to wake

up every morning and not worry about what I am eating that day for a change,

even though my choices are SOOO Much healthier, I STILL worry about it, because

now I worry about making the wrong choices... I want to get to a point where

food does not rule my day. I can't believe how much money I can spend on clothes

now instead of food. I am not bringing my whole family down with it like I was

now either. So it has many of the same issues as any other drug. I treat my food

addiction as such as well. If I just KNOW I want to gorge, I try to call a

friend and say, " I want to gorge " and they help me through it.

Bottom line is that we all experience things differently and we have to deal

with them in the same manner, we all are going to have different outlooks that

work for us and may not for others.

I have not even read all the posts yet and for some reason this just flowed

out hahaha, probably wont even make since to what all you were talking about..

but I guess I needed to say it. Thanks for listening!!!

" Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts. " -

Moynihan. That's one of my favorite quotes.

Well Oprah in my case you are very wrong I had my surgery 02/0202 and I am not

sleeping around, did get any other addiction, I dont drink, dont take any drugs

but I stopped taking all other medication and I can walk 20 miles before I get

tired but I go to the gym alot and have more fun riding my bike.

So Oprah get a life and stop selling your bull to people that have tried

everything to loose weight and decide to do something about it. And by the way I

lost over 200 Lbs and THANK GOD I am doing just fine.

Amen Mike!

Let's see if I can chat up my gym addiction:

I warm up with curling 15lb dumb bells 15 times.

I then hook them up over my head 15 times

I then lift them on my sides 15 times.

I then lift my arms out and up with them about 5 times (try this it's

hard).

I then do 15 leg curls and 15 leg crunches at 112.5lbs

I then sit and pull down 137.5lbs 15 times

I then bench press 100lbs 15 times

I then work my deltoids by expanding out 80lbs 15 times

I then work my pectorals by compressing in 120lbs 15 times

That's about it for weight lifting.

I then hop on the elliptical machine, set the resistance to level 5

(I've been told it goes up to 20 by a friend, yeah what'd he do try

that level?). I then set my weight and age into it. I then set it to

a gluteus workout. That's where the incline is 6, then 8, then 10,

then 12, then 14, then starts over again. It does this three times

throughout the workout. I do this for 25 minutes. I try to maintain

150 strides per minute. Lately I've been doing about 165 strides per

minute. I'm going to need to kick the resistance up to 7 next week.

I then get on the treadmill. I set the weight and age. I set the

incline to 3% and choose the program aerobic one where it does three

hills of 3%, then 4%, then 5%, then 6% and back down. I set the speed

to 3.8mph and go for 20 minutes. Next week I'm going to kick this up

to 4mph.

I try to increase and build on some part of this every couple of

weeks. I can't really increase the time anymore because I don't get

enough sleep if I'm doing more than an hour in the gym. I do this

almost every weekday. I might start doing it Saturday too in the

winter.

It's not really helping me lose much weight I don't think but I'm

sure getting toned. I think I might have lost 10lbs in the last month

or so. I guess that is something though.

Keep hitting the gym and add something every few weeks. You'll be

amazed where you are in a few months!

Mike, you're an animal! Impressive regimen you have there. I'm a

big advocate of weight training. The more muscle you build, the

higher your metabolism has to work to maintain it, thus the more fat

you lose. It's the best deal in town! Probably I'm starting to

sound like a broken record, broken record, broken record *CLICK*

And furthermore, Oprah should just get bent... IMHO. :)
