I get my referrals as needed because I have always had very good primary care physicians. However, I have heard some people complain. But for me personally, it's okay. And I get to see the doctors I choose, but keep in mind-I do lots of research to find good doctors. I agree though, HMO's can be tricky. Hope this helps. I was not seeking treatment for NF2 at the time though. I never had a problem getting a referral though. It has been about 6 years since I used Cigna. I hope this was a little help. We have open enrollment at work every October also and here is what I do...pick a couple of Docs that you would like to choose for your primary. Call there office, ask questions, see if they are knowledgeable about your condition and point blank ask them how they would treat you. Good luck!
