Need recommendation for Resurfacing doctor??

Any suggestions on any doctors/surgeons? I am 32 years old hence

thinking of resurfacing rather than THR. I am willing to travel if

there is any excellent surgeon who specializes in Resurfacing(partial

or full..I don't know???)??

At thirty-two if your a suitable candidate go for it, go for a BHR. this is as

far I am concerned the one that was first on the scene and been constantly

updated in the last 12 years, read about them on the net satisfy yourself, I

went to Chennia India for my operation and was very pleased with my treatment

go for a surgeon with long term experience of this procedure.

My son (20 years old with AVN) is having surgery December 17th with

Dr. Grecula at Sealy Hospital at UTMB in Galveston. He is one

of the doctors in the Conserve Plus resurfacing study. There have

been several other people on this site who had hip resurfacing by

Dr. Grecula. Let me know if you want more information.

While browsing through messages here, couple of other names also

popped up like Dr. Austz in LA or so?? I visited the JRI website and

it looks impressive. Does Dr. Grecula do the same procedure like

minimally invasive resurfacing? Any idea, how many resufs has he done

successfully?? By any chance, do you know any success or failure

story of resurfacing?

I saw two surgeons in Houston and both of them said " NO " to

resurfacing as they think it is not a successful or proven surgery

and told me that resurfacing etc has been advertised or prpogated by

salesmen not by doctors. I am so confused as they are quite reputed

doctors (Thei names figured in Best Doctors of America as well) and

well known in medical community.

I am not able to decide the right course of action. I might be

sounding quite confused and in fact,I am. Any help/advise will be

gretaly appreciated.

Vinc,

You've found a good place to begin gathering information about

resurfacing. I have been the one in our family researching through

the internet because my son just couldn't seem to deal with it. He

had two surgeries in less than two years and thought he was on his

way to recovery. This past January a CT scan showed no necrosis. Six

months later the next xray showed the femoral head had collapsed. As

far as Dr. Grecula, I believe he worked with Dr. Amstutz at the JRI

in LA. The first OS told our son to change his major and find a

career working at a desk...that did not go over well to a 19 year

old! We were fortunate that the 2nd OS we saw in Houston told us

about resurfacing (although he was not in the study) and recommended

Dr. Grecula to us. Sorry, I don't know how many resurfacings Dr.

Grecula has done. Although he thinks resurfacing would be the best

thing for Jeff because he's so young, there is real doubt whether

there is enough live bone in the femoral head to be able to do the

resurfacing. We'll have to wait and see what he finds during the

operation, but Jeff may just end up with a metal on metal THR. I

think there's also a doctor in Dallas that is doing resurfacing. Try

looking through the archives. There are many success stories and a

few failed resurfacing stories on this site. I know trying to learn

about all this is overwhelming, but there is a wealth of information

here. I guess my only advice would be to try and see a doctor who is

doing resurfacing as soon as you can. Sometimes waiting can be the

difference between resurfacing and THR. If you are a candidate for

resurfacing, my opinion is that would be your best bet to be able to

recover and have an active lifestyle.

Not all doctors keep up to date.

Not all doctors are prepared to acknowledge the value of a surgery if

Kind of a dumb comment that it would be marketing hype since

resurfacing hasn't been approved for marketing in the US.

There is an article soon to be published in the Journal of Bone and

Joint Surgery (JBJS) - I think had a link to an extract on his

website (http://www.activejoints.com) - basically it shows that

resurfacing has proven to be very successful over the period of the

clinical trials and follow-up.

I think the folks that are giving you the marketing hype are the

doctors that are telling you that.

WATCH OUT!! ANY DOCTOR THAT TELLS YOU RESURFACING IS NO GOOD, GET THE HELL

OUT OF THAT OFFICE AS FAST YOUR ACHING HIPS WILL ALLOW.

Hi,

You raise one of the problems that happens all over the place when something

new hits the scenes......... i.e. there is going to be those who have some

reason or another to state that the new thing couldn't possibly work for

whatever reasons they can round up............... Sadly these can be doctors

with great reputations as well as anyone else - for even though we often put

them up there on big pedestals, they are after all human...........

In US this concept of potential problems is helped along by the long FDA

trial period etc and so you are not seeing a large number of people getting

a Resurface etc as yet.......... Here in Australia we appear to have

accepted the UK results and just started doing Resurface ops over 4 years

ago.......... The only limit here is on the number of surgeons trained and I

don't think there has been anything really about salesmen being

involved........... here it seems to me as soon as patients have gotten wind

of the process they start travelling far and wide to find a surgeon who does

it............ especially if younger and wanting to be more active

later.........

I live in a pretty small remote part of Australia and yet I know 5 others

with a Resurface hip......... I suspect you will find the same in US once

the trials are finished and doctors trained.........and yes until recently

some of our surgeons not wanting change were happy to tell patients that

Resurface couldn't work......... In an interview a friend had one finally

said, when pushed far enough, " well in truth I am just too old to bother

retraining'....... The truth is if they indeed lived up to their reputation

the least they could do is give you a referral to someone who does do the

surgery for an opinion..........

The most important thing you can do is simply find the closest doctor to you

in your trials and go see him...... that will at least tell you if you have

anything to toss up about........... for hips can easily be beyond not being

resurfacable and it would be a pity to get carried away fretting about

something that cannot happen........ Some have also simply sent xrays to

surgeons who will comment.............
