I am posting this for my 17-year-old daughter who has AVN in her

right hip from an accident about 4 year ago. After 4 operations and

continued deterioration in her hip joint she has been accepted by a

local surgeon for a Hip resurfacing but we have been told its at

least two years off because of the restrictions on the number they

can do a year here in Alberta Canada. My daughter is in extreme pain

and can't put up with the pain much less put her life on hold for

two

more years. As a result we are looking for doctors to do the

procedure in either the US or UK and pay for it ourselves.

I have contacted the JRI (Dr Schmalzreid) in LA as he was recommended

as being an excellent surgeon with lots of experience but the cost

seems excessive ($ 50K US). Can anyone recommend someone with lots

of experience that I can contact I know of Dr. Smet in Belgium but I

was wondering if anyone knew what the costs were in some other

countries for this procedure?

I am in B.C. and can relate to the long waitlist problem. I had been on a

waitlist for two years for a THR, and in constant pain. In a way I was lucky

because I didn't hear about the reurfacing procedure until this past May, and if

the waitlist had been shorter, it would have been too late, I would be sitting

here with a THR instead of a resurf. I think the OSS' in Alberta must have

longer waitlists than in Ontario. I spoke to Dr Kim's assisant in Ottawa and

the wait was about 10 months. If cost is a factor, you might want to check that

out, as the cost was only $3000, to cover the prosthesis. After a lot of

research, I went to Dr De Smet in Belgium in late August, having only to wait 3

months, and it could have been less time, if I could have arranged things faster

here. He charges 10,500 euros, which was about $17,000 Canadain. That was

cheaper than the UK doctorsa who had as much experience as he has.

I am now 3 months post-op and very happy wioth my new hip. Recovery takes

awhile, but at least I know I'll only get better, not worse. You can send your

daughter's xrays to Dr De Smet by fedex and he gets back to you right away as to

whether she is a candidate. Only doc I know who ansers his own emails, and

usually within 2 hours. For someone as young as your daughter, it seems like a

good choice. givng her more ROM, probably longer life of the prosthesis, etc.

Feel free to email me if you have more questions.

Hi Jon

I chose to go to England because of the long waiting lists in

Canada. Tests showed my bone density in the painful hip was rapidly

deteriorating, and I was afraid it would be too late for a resurfacing

if I waited. The cost with Mr. McMinn was about $24,000.00 Canadian,

including one week in a private hospital, but I had a free place to

stay for the second week post-op (they don't want you to take the long

flight home until then), so if you have to stay in a hotel or B&B, you

should add on that cost. I understand that most of the UK doctors

charge less that McMinn, especially if you stay a shorter time in a

public hospital. On the other hand, some of their waiting lists are

longer. I was able to get a surgery date with McMinn in about 5 weeks,

and knew several people here in Vancouver who had gone to him with

good results.

From my research, it seemed much cheaper to go to England than to

the U.S. (even though the flight from Los Angeles would have been a

lot shorter and enabled me to go home sooner), and the doctors in

England have a longer experience with resurfacing. Also, it was a big

help to have two weeks with no household responsibilities after the

operation.

The Medical Services Plan here in B.C. would not cover any of my

costs, but I decided that the investment in my health was worth it,

and luckily I was able to borrow the money by increasing the mortgage

on my home. I'm six weeks post-op today, and yesterday I walked about

6 blocks with no cane, although I still use it when I'm tired. Your

daughter would probably recover more quickly, being so young, as long

as she doesn't try to do too much too fast.

Best of luck,

n

i am having my left hip done at the JRI (Schmalzreid) in 2 weeks. If

you pay cash, the cost is $27,000.00 US$. And the JRI / Amstutz /

Schmalzreid are a few of the best in this business.

Is that the total cost of the operation ie hospital, doctors fees etc

because the $ 50K was the number they sent me but it did mention

insurance so maybe if its cash they give a discount? Last time we

went down to the US for some medical the bills never stopped coming.

Good luck and let me know what happens as that option is still open.

Verne,

Thanks I am getting that impression from this group if I didn't know

better I would think this was sponsored by him. I have two concerns

first is the travel distance and having to change planes multiple

times plus train travel etc. and if complications happen after you

come back who do you go to? My daughters doctor would be pretty

reluctant to look at her based on his help so far.

Hi Jon

I had the same concern about a local surgeon to follow up and I had to find

another one since the original one was not supportive -to say the least- of me

going to resurface in Belgium. So I found another one who was Ok and will follow

up (am going to De smet January 6).

as far as travel: if you are going with your daughter that should be OK: travel

light (that is what I was told) and you can ask for assistance in airport (wheel

chair) and I was told to travel on the train from Brussels to Gent in first

class to avoid the crowd.

But first send your daughter's Xray to Dr De Smet to see if he beleives she is a

candidate for BHR.

Thanks for the info, yes the doctor thing I need confirmed before she

goes anywhere out of the country for treatment. My daughters x-rays

are on their way via courier to Belgium so hopefully I should find

out soon if she is a good candidate for BHR. One other question are

you doing blood donations for yourself prior to the operation or are

you just going to rely on their blood supply? In my daughters

previous Osteotomy surgery she donated her own blood so she had two

units of her own which was lucky as she needed both of them.

Tx Again all of you for the great info and help!

Jon: The travel etc. was only difficult for us on the way over - not

a problem at all on the way home. We stayed 10 days after the

operation but actually felt we could have travelled easily at one

week. We flew Lufthansa to Franfurt and then to Brussels. The

train station is in the airport and it is a short cab ride from the

airport to the hospital (I mean minutes).

I suppose the one good thing about Canada's medical system is that in

an emergency situation one actually does get care, the problem is that

you can't get the care to keep you out of that situation to begin

with. In any event don't be afraid to ask around, our surgeon in

Vancouver has done the followup for us and I suspect that if you look

you will find a doctor who is him/herself fed up with the situation

and will understand why you can't wait.

No Koen doesn't sponsor this site, but I must admit it must look like

that. I know of at least 12 others here in Vancouver who have gone

to see him since we went and there are many others who have gone to

England to McMinn or Traecy.

don't give up, this is just too important for your daughter

I was done by Dr De Smet in August. Belgium does not allow you to donate

blood for yourself. Apparently there is no problem getting enough.

The plan was to donate the blood in country as you can start about 4

weeks before the surgery and take it with us to Belgium but I don't

know if thats allowed? Maybe somebody else can comment on that

option and if its feasible.

The plan was to donate the blood in country as you can start about 4

weeks before the surgery and take it with us to Belgium but I don't

know if thats allowed? Maybe somebody else can comment on that

option and if its feasible.

I don't believe you're allowed to bring blood products in from a foreign country

(even though they are your own).

My first surgeon had told me that it has to be refrigerated and anyway at 4

weeks is not as good as fresh one!

Hi All,

On the subject of cost: I just calculated my cost going to DeSmet in

Belgium. Dr & Hosp= $14,106 Air=$1680 Hotel & Misc =$2765....total 18,551.

(I stayed almost 4 weeks and got 3 seats on the airplane) Air price was

good, exchange rate not so good.

Seems our most important decisions are to pick the device and the

surgeon. My insurance pushed my decision, and I am actually grateful now!

Great surgeon, great device, great travel & surgery experience.

Jon,

unless it's changed in the last years you can not take blood into

another country. Koen didn't think i'd need it since his ops take

about 45 min. If it were necessary you would have to go to Belgium

a month early and give there. Koen said that he preferred not to

have the added stress on the body. In an emergency they will give

you blood from their supply. Worked for me....none needed, and i

think you will hear the same from most of the other Belgium Hippies.
