Guest guest
Just curious? My dd is 5 and her TSH is 2.66, range .27-4.2 freeT4 is 1.05 range .7-1.7 Elaine
Guest guest
Oh, Elaine, I feel her pain. I agree that her T4 could be a little higher, but it's not low enough to be the only cause. Does she have the other classic hypo symptoms - severe constipation, dry skin, hair, nails, fatigue? I am so happy that you're trying to help her. I've struggled all my life even on the thyroid medication. For some reason hypos can gain weight, but the medication doesn't really take it away. Can you get a free T3 to see what's going on with that? From what I've heard, the T3 is releated more to the weight issues... Judy She is extremely overweight and I am trying to find out why. She does not eat enough to be this heavy. I am trying to help her. I am hypo and I just had a feeling. She is adopted so I have no idea about the birthparents. From what I understand the T4 should be a lot higher. Elaine __________________________________________________
Guest guest
While her labs look “normal” her T4 can be in the upper to high end as well as her T3F... TSH can be as low as 1.0 or under. Are they doing further tests, i.e. Cortisol, adrenals, hormonal? Sue She is extremely overweight and I am trying to find out why. She does not eat enough to be this heavy. I am trying to help her. Guest guest
Thanks for your help. I wish I had asked about the T3. I am going to next week. She does have severe dry skin and hair but I attributed that to her race. I am hypo and am frustrated that I have gained and can't loose. But I have not had my T3 tested either. Guest guest
No as of yet they say they are normal, until I told them my endo said TSH around 1. So I think when we go back next week I can get them to do the rest. I have to do my research first and present my info. You know, educate the pediatrician. Guest guest
Hi Elaine. It's really hard to lose weight when you're hypo, even when properly medicated. I have no idea why that is. Please try not to let your daughter see your frustration. I can't stress how important it is that you not let her in on anything that you're doing. What I mean by that, is that at that age, you control all of her food and activities, so it would be easy for you to alter it as you need to without making a big deal out of it. I don't know if you were overweight as a child, but I was (at a time when most people weren't) and I can remember my brothers eating chips while I had carrot sticks. I didn't know why I was so different, but already I felt inferior and I have carried that stigma with me for decades. Intellectually, I know that it's not true, but it's a very hard habit to break. I am still battling my weight to this day and probably always will. I believe that if I hadn't been so tortured by it as a child, that I would not be as heavy today. I went on my first doctor ordered 800 cal/day diet when I was thirteen years old. We all know now that is not enough food, but it started 40 years of yoyo dieting. I'm really glad that you came back because this has been on my mind since my last post. Take from it what you will, and I'm certainly not telling you how to raise your daughter, just providing a perspective that you may not have thought of. My sister was a 5'10", 120 lb, blonde haired, crystal ball queen with straight A's. Tough act to follow... Judy Thanks for your help. I wish I had asked about the T3. I am going to next week. I do not want to be skeptical here.. obviously there is some reason for getting labs done on a 5 year old , what symptoms and signs is she showing and what other tests did the doctor do? Sickle cell enemia? Blood sugar levels? You say she is adopted, how long has she been with you? One issue with adopting besides not having a medical record is that depending on where she was before you adopted her is a lot of them tend to have what is called hoarding skills..they only get attention come meal time and tend to hoard food... I mention this cause my girlfriend adopted a 14 month old.. and he already had this embedded into him..when she asked around, did tests etc..she was told by physcologists that this is what can happen.. basically he was left in a playpen all day and let out to eat..he was taken care of, fed , clean etc.. but had more of an attachment to food..now that he is just over three, he runs and plays and has slimmed down quite a bit..she still has to monitor his meals and food though..he eats lots but does not seem to have the I am full switch so she has to portion his meals knowing he will eat what ever size plate you give him..He is a meth baby though so they say it makes it worse and he will have to be taught portion control as he will never learn this ability. Guest guest
Yes, she is not anemic. We got her when she was 21 days. No, she was tested for sickle cell anemia when she was born. At least that is what I was told. I may pursue the blood sugar levels. Good idea. Elaine > > > > Mostly overweight. 95 in weight and only 50 in height. Can't run > > without problems.
