Guest guest
Hi Jimmy, My son, even tho he's only 4, loves to play music. He plays the guitar, keyboard, and drums. We have some friends that are in a band and they have been teaching him to play guitar and drums. They really love the fact that Geoffrey is soo into music and they can teach him, since none of their kids are old enough yet to really be interested. Also, when I was in high school in the marching band, our director's wife was totally deaf in one ear and had a hearing aid in the other (I forgot her degree of loss in that ear), but she played saxophone and was the BEST jazz musician I have heard. And most of the time she played by ear...... My Yahoo 360 My Webshots Albums --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Guest guest
This topic is so interesting to me. We just inherited a piano from my mother (dad doesn't play) and my Grace, 3.5, severe/profound with AN, just loves to play it. I wonder if she can hear it or if she feels it. And the piano fits the idea of an instrument that you don't need to hear it in order to play it correctly. If she can learn to relate the notes to the specific key, she could be great at it. We have lots of piano players in the family so maybe she will continue the tradition. Anyone sending their deaf kid to piano lessons? We'll be waiting a few years on that due to time and money limitations but I'm sure piano will be in Grace's future. Cherie P.S. It helps me to remember everyone's story if we include the severity of HL and ages. I hope you all don't mind if I continually tell you Grace's diagnosis. Emmett, who is 3.9 years and is unilaterally deaf with a mild (aided) loss in his other ear, just amazes us. He's got perfect pitch and is constantly singing or " playing " some kind of instrument (could be just the floor or some blocks that he's banging a tune away with ... and we can tell what song he's playing, too!). My husband can play any instrument he touches (piano, cello, mandolin, you name it), and really doesn't read music, just plays by ear. Our hearing daughter unfortunately takes after me and can't carry a tune in a bag. I do music classes with Emmett now and will for another year. I did them with Emma, too. I stay with them and we sing, dance, play instruments. It's a ton of fun. Johanna __________________________________________________

Guest guest
My son Ben is 12 and uses both a CI and hearing aid. When he was in the 4th grade, we were attending one of his older sister's school concerts. He was really interested in the drummer and said he wanted to play the drums because he could " feel it in his skin. " He started playing the drums in the fifth grade and joined the beginner band. He takes private lessons after school with the school music teacher, who does wonderful with Ben. Being part of the band, being part of a group, has been a very positive thing for Ben. > Can anyone advise if their son or daughter (or themselves) play a > musical instrument, and if so what instrument? , 10 years old has > been (SNH, mild to moderate) has been told by the band teacher that he > can pick a trumpet, a trombone, or a baritone. Guest guest
Hi Jimmy, My daughter Hannah (8 1/2, bilateral mild/moderate mixed loss, aided) has been playing the piano for 3 years now and has done quite well. Piano was her idea, because she had some friends who were taking lessons. She is just about to start violin lessons through school, which requires hearing the pitch pretty well, but I think she will handle it OK. She also loves to sing, and will make up songs of her own as well as singing favorites, especially Christmas carols (any time of year). Her pitch is not always perfect but once she learns a song she can sing it well. best, --- hurli18 wrote: > Can anyone advise if their son or daughter (or > themselves) play a > musical instrument, and if so what instrument? > , 10 years old has > been (SNH, mild to moderate) has been told by the > band teacher that he > can pick a trumpet, a trombone, or a baritone. > Haven't yet heard back > from the audie yet, but we are getting the > impression he might be > better suited for a rythmic type instrument > (drums, etc.) Any help or > input would be greatly appreciated. > > Jimmy > > > __________________________________ Yahoo!
