Bruce, the thought of looking on ebay did cross my mind---- LOL --- then

I thought about it and decided that would be too risky. I have been buying

on ebay for years and also sell on ebay --- but I think buyer beware always

applies. Something as critical as test strips would not be something I would

buy from there.

Thanks to everyone who has been so helpful. Ya'll have all given me a lot

of options on where to look for less expensive meters and strips. I really

appreciate all the ideas and support.

Jane,

We didn't have any insurance when I was first diagnosed and started testing

6 times a day and was put on insulin. We couldn't afford the extra $100

either. What I did was ordered mine on eBay. After I bought from this lady

2 times on eBay, we decided to do it without eBay. I got 100 strips, 100

syringes (and they were all still in the original individual wrappings, and

100 lancets and alcohol swabs for $50 a month. This really helped me. I

don't still have her contact info. We now have insurance through my

husbands company. Fortunately they pay 100% on all syringes, test strips,

meters, needles for my insulin pen. My insulins are $30 copay.

I hope you can find a deal somewhere. I know how discouraging it is to have

to spend that money. I felt guilty. I don't work outside the home, but

knowing the financial aspect was a great deal for us, it was hard. Hope

you work something out!!

If you get the Walgreens brand on the Wal Mart brand they run about $70 a

month.

One thing--DON'T get strips from e-bay. They are of doubtful quality,

and are often even expired. That being said, there are, I am sure,

reliable online sources. I can't give any specific advice.

Re: Diagnosis is in and some questions

Hi Jane,

I saw some cheap strips at Walmart, you might have to get a different

meter - usually the meter comes free and the strips are where they make

their money back

Re: Diagnosis is in and some questions

I just called Blue Cross and ya'll were right --- it is covered under

major

medical..... They recommended that I call Liberty Medical to get my

testing

supplies.....

The bad news is we have a $1000 calendar year deductible. Liberty

Medical

won't handle any supplies if your deduct is over $250 --- I don't

think we

have had any expenses so far that counts toward the deduct ---- so it

looks

like I will have to be purchasing the supplies out of pocket.

So now I am going to start looking for the lowest cost supplies I can

find

---- and I guess limiting my testing also ---- I really like my

Freestyle

Flash monitor as it is totally painless on my arm --- but the strips

are

around $1 each at Walgreens. So I need to look for a lower cost

source.

Thanks

Jane, you shouldn't be afraid to buy strips on Ebay. They all come in sealed

boxes with an expiration date. When I was first diagnosed, I bought ALL my test

strips on Ebay. Now my ins pays for them and now I sell them occasionally on

Ebay myself.

I have never had a problem either buying or selling.

Geez Bruce, I disagree with you 100%. I bought strips on Ebay for at least the

first two years after I was diagnosed and never had problem one. None of them

were expired. All boxes are sealed.

As a list member, if I offered you strips would you take them from me? There

is no difference if I offered them to you thru the list or sold the exact same

ones on Ebay. The last 100 One Touch strips that I sold last week had never

been opened and had an expiration date of 12/06.

I've also bought strips and monitors on Ebay without problems. The trick is

to be sure they post SIB (sealed in box) and list the expiration date. I

also check the sellers feedback. Most sellers will post pics of the box

w/expiration date showing. :)

YMMV, of course, but I do know people who got into trouble with e-bay

strips.

But where do these people get the strips from? I dont know that I would feel

comfortable buying them from anyone who was not an accredited pharmacy - I might

be oversensitive here, but I would be concerned. At a local flea market, they

sell strips, and they do have sealed boxes, but the word is they " fell off a

truck " -

What? you sell off your extras that your insurance company paid for? I

wondered where people who sell them on eBay get the strips in the first

place as they don't make any money if they actually paid for them. Is

that the case? Because if so it's insurance fraud.

My opinion (based on certain info from the lady I purchased from)

where they get them is that some of them have parents on Medicaid or are

on Medicare themselves and from what I have heard from others,

medicaid and medicare both supply way more strips than most people need.

They sell them to make money or just because they do have so many.

I know that isn't a very honest thing to do, but because of it it really

helped me out.

Someone recommended American Diabetes Wholesale. I ordered some

strips through them. They are a little over half the cost of

retail. It is on the internet.
