Guest guest
, I am highly sensitive with smells/scents. In fact even most perfumes are offensive to em. I am worse at some times, than others. It is really annoying to others when I am so bad that every smell is making me nauseous. I don't know if this is an EDS related phenomena or not. Guest guest
Yes , Dylan is tactile too. We had a big discussion on this before you joined. Many folks here have issues with smell, sound, and feel of things. Dylan's since of smell is drives me crazy, but I'd have to say the sounds for him are worse. Music, wind chimes, water fountains, things we find relaxing are very irritating to him. I'm surprised you haven't gotten more responses to this. Some people here couldn't use a mattress or pillow because of the plastic they were wrapped in from the factory. Dylan can go outside and smell things that make his stomach turn, that I don't smell. We live close to a steel factory and an animal disposal incinerator. He knows everytime the animals from the dog pound are being destroyed. I don't smell a thing. It seems that he can tell the difference when different liquid steel is being poured a mile away. All I see is the sky lit up at night in an orange glow. I smell nothing. Even though you have not had the responses to your question, I have seen from before that does seem to be an " EDS thing " . With 's OCD with EDS, I can only guess the smells, make the issue a bigger deal for her. Cindy C. are you tactile? Just wondering ------- My is SO tactile. Especially with smells. She has smelled EVERYTHING ever since I can remember. Down to pens, pencils, paper, silverware, well, EVERYTHING! I remember her kindergaten teacher asking me about it after just a week in school. I guess she went around the classroom smelling everything. If something doesn't smell right, she won't have anything to do with it. She can't even take a blanket back into her bedroom if it's been in another part of the house until it's washed. She says it picks up the smell from wherever it's been, and it's not the " bedroom " smell. I always thought this was due to her OCD. She takes deoderant and perfume with her EVERYWHERE she goes. And, that may be it - her OCD. I can't even sit next to her if I've not brushed my teeth and washed my hands. I smoke, so that smell really bothers her. But, I was wondering if maybe EDS had any part in this. I don't notice it as much in myself. But, I do have a problem with smells. My house has to smell just right. If not, I'm forever looking for the " source " of the weird smell (even if it's not a bad smell) and cleaning everything I can think of that may be causing it. (when I feel ok, that is) Anybody else have this " problem " ? To learn more about EDS, visit our website: http://www.ceda.ca
Guest guest
Sue, I agree, As a massage therapist, being stuck in a small room for an hour with a client with some obnoxious cologne, at times has made me nauseous. Including my own adult kids. What smells good to them, makes me sick. I don't understand why they think it smells good and spend big $ on it. Many of my kids cologne to me smells rancid. What happened to " Old Spice? " I loved that stuff. My grandpa wore it. I was able to switch my husband to it. Cindy C. From: smginleyrn@... , I am highly sensitive with smells/scents. Guest guest
is only bothered by bad smells. She really overdoes the perfume sometimes. Now that she's older, we have bought her some really good perfume (I hate that cheap stuff). We spent a lot on her " " perfume, and she used it so fast. Oh well, at least she pays attention to how she smells! I guess it's better than the opposite!
Guest guest
I did ask about the sounds a little while ago, adn got some replys about that. I remember Mike said his wife Darlene gets real anoyed with sounds, just like me and do. I thought we were the only ones. My husband thinks we're nuts when we complain about someone's eating noises. Geeze, what in the world do you live near that makes the sky glow at night? Spooky. We used to have our horses at a stable next to a pig rendering place. It was disgusting. But, some of the girls with horses there thought it smelled good! That I don't understand! It was not too good having that near the stables either, as horses are afraid of pigs!!! I couldn't ride our welsh cob past any pig anywhere. And she was the most gentle, predictable, safe, precious mare ever there was! She just wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with the pigs. Needless to say, we moved stables pretty quick. She wasn't happy there smelling the burning pig leftovers! The other thing about smells - if something is too strong, even if it smells good, that is like an oil, it makes sick (me too). I think I told you about that plug in oil thing we got. And incense burning for too long makes me and get upset stomaches.
Guest guest
Ha! Our 's are opposites there! Since mine has OCD, she takes at least 2 showers a day. Usually more. And, of course, she has to use 2 towels per shower. So, you can imagine what my laundry is like. And I didn't even mention the clothes changing - and no, it's not the normal teenage clothes changing. It's like even if she notices what she thinks is a weird or bad smell on her clothes, or gets something on them - even water - she off changing them. And, of course, they have to be washed before she will put them back in her room. And yes, she usually does her own laundry. I'd be crazy if I didn't at least make her do that! I do it sometimes if I'm feeling nice.

Wish my would be more aware of how her body smells...although I make her take a shower at least every other day but sometimes it's still a fight to get her to do it! And she doesn't put deodarant on right....<sheesh> She is sensitive to smells too. One year for the holidays, the therapy dept I was working in all went out to lunch at the Olive Garden Italian Restaurant. The spicey smells got to me and it caused my IBS to act up. Not even half way thru the meal I was in the bathroom with diarrhea and again before we ever left the restaurant. It was a combination of the smell and all the spices that did my stomach/GI tract in as well as the nose! Bonnie

I don't remmember that they did any good but I was looking for the bottle the other day to take when I had to drive an hour to the gi doctor. I had thrown them away. Did Mayo tell you that narcolepsy and Add are treated the same way? I never knew that. Someone asked me if I wanted to go onn Ritalin lately. I think it was the EDS doc at hopkins but I said no. Maybe I should have agreed but I am on so much already. D.

Guest guest
Thanks. It's very hard, but we are doing everything we can think of to help her, and to help her brother and sister, who suffer from her actions. We muddle through, but somedays it seems overwhelming.
