Guest guest
Hi Devin, I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but this has been going on with me since about a year after RAI...If I am sleeping or laying on my right side, the left side of my tongue swells, drys and goes numb, if I am on my left side, the right side of my tongue does the same thing. There is a very good chance that I have salivary and tear duct damage due to the RAI I had, and yes, there are a couple of medical studies on this. Does your friend have it when laying down or sleeping, or does she have it at various times? Has she had RAI also? Guest guest
Hi Devin, My story comes under " indirect experiences " . Recently I had a tongue problem. It did start as a tingly feeling, went to a slight almost burning sensation, and then on to extreme painful BURNING tongue.By that time I was in pain from it, and unable to eat. My dentist said it was from extreme dry mouth. I happened to be on my trip down into hypo at the time. Since dry mouth can be hypo, this was making sense. BUT...my BP kept rising as I became more hypo. Went to a new doctor and started on thyroid replacement, and the same day, heart medication for the BP. The doctor said the burning tongue could be from another medication ( I take no other meds ) or anxiety. Strangest thing happened. I took my first BP pill, and after about an hour, I could feel the burning decrease a LOT ! I would say about 75% of the pain went away right then. So perhaps, since both hyper and hypo can cause anxiety and high BP, maybe her tingling is related to this ? Since I am alone with this tongue thing,( the burning part, as the tingling was early on and things just progressed ), I will be interested to hear if your friends tongue responds to her thyroid treatment. BTW...with dry mouth, you do still make saliva, just not enough. Before I knew it was dry mouth, I did notice I was having trouble speaking clearly.. sounded a bit like a small speech impediment. A good clue if anyone is wondering. Dry mouth causes gum problems and in turn tooth problems and bone loss. Standard 'cure' is more sipping of water and saliva substitute...which does not work if you are in advanced stages, but correct thyroid levels and BP meds are working...I am almost there. Oh, and I found a tongue spray that seems to make it feel better...Breath Remedy. -Pam L - hoping your friend will join us :-)
Guest guest
Devin, Could be food allergies. I had that and found out I'm allergic to sulfites, walnuts and mushrooms. Might be useful to have your friend get some allergy testing done. My tongue would tingle and also feel swollen. Guest guest
Take a look at this link regarding your burning tongue. I had burning tongue in 1990 and coincidentally was diagnosed with Graves in 2000. Not sure if they are related in anyway. The burning tongue went away on its own in about 6-7 months. I was told it was stress related but read the following link for an alternative explaination. http://www.newhavenadvocate.com/articles/tongue1.html
Guest guest
One of the books I'm reading now, Energy Medicine by Donna Eden, talks about phantom pains - like people who have had an arm amputated or were born without one but who have pains in their non-existant arm anyway... and she is able to fix that by re-aligning your energy fields... don't know if that is the same thing as the burning tounge issue... Guest guest
Hi gerdesl6, Thank you for a very interesting article! When I was first beginning the read on it, I could feel my bp go up reading all the doctors, all the drugs and all the dismissals that first patient received. Amazing that this trial and error and 'I think it is...' is far to prominent in medical treatment today. I have bookmarked this article so I can keep it on hand should it be needed in the future. Thanks again, Jody _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
