Hi Lois,

*Rubbing* was what my physio recommended for the lumpy scar after my

Total Knee Replacement in April, and it worked well. So I've started doing

that on the hip scar. I have had a laugh about how I'd look in a swimsuit -

I'd probably clear the pool, with everyone running away in shock! - as I

have 4 surgical scars of varying size on the knee and thigh on that side

(RHS) from the removal of a long titanium " nail " (rod) and four screws from

a previous injury, and a standard scar across my left knee from the Total

Knee Replacemnt. They are my badges of courage, and I can live with them -

especially as they are the outward signs of my ticket to mobility.

Cheers,

Virginia (27/08/03)

Hi Virginia

By 'rubbing' do you mean sort of massaging the incision, and if so, did your

physio mean to use a cream while doing it? More info appreciated.

Hi Sharry,

Yes, I guess I meant massaging with fingertips. Just on localised lumpy

areas. I don't think my physio mentioned massage oil after my knee surgery,

but I had some very nice oil and was using it on all the areas of dry skin,

anyway. Latterly, since the hip surgery, I've again had dry skin on my shins

and ankles, and have mostly used sorbelene cream, and only occasionally the

massage oil. With the hip scar, there are almost no localised lumpy areas ,

just one small one, and I probably don't need to massage it. There has also

been absolutely *no* pain or soreness in the wound, not even on day 1.

Hi Virginia

I am not sure if we have sorbeline cream in Canada - I'll cehck at a

pharmacy, but I wonder if that's an Australian product?

I have some lumps along the sitiches, so started ;massaging with cream as soon

as I heard of your therapist recommending it - can't hurt....

I'm sure you would have it in Canada - but the name may be different. It's

sorbelene (sp?) and glycerine. I can't find it in my pharmacology text,

probably because it may not be pharmacologically active. It is usually

either made up by the pharmacist with glycerine, or sold very cheaply as a

generic brand by pharmacy chains.
