We never did testing either. When I heard about the diet I couldn't wait to

get testing done, I had to start immediately. My son had a couple of things

he wasn't supposed to and now it's been 6 days and no reaction. I'm

wondering what is going on.

I know exactly what you are saying. We are in the same position

ourselves with our 23 month old ds. I put him on the diet at 13 months

old and he's done phenomenally. There is no one around who would ever

diagnose this kid as autistic. However, that's a mixed blessing, as you

know. We are just now pursuing finding out what's " wrong " with him (I

suspect mild autism, but it's been " fixed " by the diet) and the most

we've gotten is sensory integration dysfuncion, though we go see a

diet-friendly dev ped in February. Luckily Early Intervention is

providing some services to him too. Ds has had some infringements in

the last week and we are paying for it, he's crabby, demanding, whiny,

aggressive, screamy, well, you know the drill. Not the sweet child he

was a few weeks ago. Ah well, each infringement is more proof to me that

the diet is so essential to him.

You are lucky to have discovered this. Many parents don't see this

intensive reaction, and often become convinced the diet has done no good.

Like you, we found out after a casein infraction that our son indeed had a

problem. He ate half a bag of M & M's at school, and his behavior was

unreal. In a way, it was a valuable lesson for us. My husband wasn't

convinced about the diet, and after the infraction when he saw my son laying

on the floor screaming for 30 minutes straight and chanting " I want cheese

curds " , (his favorite prediet food), he was convinced and then some! It was

like a junky begging for his best fix.

My son had some A&W rootbeer for a couple of days, and on day 2, he was

hysterical, perseverating, self-directed and very difficult to manage -

quite like the pre-diet days. I don't even know if A&W is GFCF, but I

think it made him crazy. It also could have been latkes that my husband

made that might have had a trace amount of regular flour in it. In any

case, the diet stays!!!

I'm pretty sure it has carmel coloring. We(and apparently you too) have

eliminated all colored sodas. gets an occasional 7-UP or Sprite.

It's actually kind of like when I was a kid when " pop " was a special thing

that we didn't get every day.

I don't know if it's caramel coloring or what, but there definitely is

something in Pepsi that lights up. He goes into wacko stimmy world

and has nasty green diarrhea and foul smelling belches for 2 to 3 days after

only a sip or two.
