Guest guest
Tikva, I sent you a reply earlier, but it did not show up. I'm so sorry to hear that Mai is still not well. Sometimes it does take RSS kids longer to stabilize than other kids. Once low blood sugar is involved, it can take days and days. The vomiting is caused by the virus, but also could be acidosis because of the low BSL. Mai probably needs more rest for her stomach and IV fluids, as you already know. Please give her a kiss for me and hang in there! Jodi
Guest guest
Tikva - has had rotovirus 3 times now!!! Just recently last week. If she stopped vomiting and is vomiting again, a very common sign of the rotovirus. She needs more time with NOTHING in her stomach. This means a longer time on an IV. I am surprised that it has taken 7 days, though, so you may want to get a stool sample again and confirm that the virus is still there in full force. Normally, in our very experienced experiences, the only way to beat rotavirus is NOTHING in the stomach for 3 days or so, with only D10 and electrolytes in an IV. Then after that, start with sips of water. If the child can hold down the sips of water, move to gatorade or pedialyte. If they can hold that down for 6 hours or so, move to chicken broth and other clear liquids (e.g., jello). Another 6 hours or so, move to maybe chicken noodles, bits of saltine crackers. Again, wait 6 hours or overnight. I do not believe ANY milk or formula should yet be given because it is too hard on the stomach. During all this testing of food/liquid, the IV D10 should continue to be given. After the child can hold down toast, crackers, etc., then we have found that we can try pediasure, formula or milk. After waiting another 12 hours or so with this, THEN leave the hospital. These are just are experiences, but we have been successful with this. Rotavirus has typically been a 5-day period for us, and the normal stomach flu has been 3 days from entrance to hospital after vomiting to exit. Good luck!
