Thank you soo much for your input. We really appreciate it. I need to call the

technician Monday and tell him we need a wider bar. Thank you.

Re: Lacking Info.

Hello

It sounds to me like you were left hanging in the wind!!!!

The DBB is difficult to get used to even with instruction.

OK Here's my 2 cents worth.

Make sure that the shoes are shoulder width apart. That is back of

heel to back of heel.

For bilateral clubfeet the shoes should be rotated out 70 degrees.

Depending of course on the fact that she was rotated out that much

with her last casts.

Normally the shoes should be straight last (no right or left) not

reverse last (pointed toes outwards)

Baby feet do not react well to hard leather and often blisters do

occur. Moleskin or duroplast works well to stop any rubbing.

Make sure that her heels are well down in the boot. undo the laces

totally do up the strap really tight and then lace. (That's how I do

it anyway.)When you put them on they should be tighter than you think

they should be. If when you pull on the boot her toes move back it is

too loose. Sounds brutal but it is critical, if they are too loose

they will rub more.

Have a look in the archives too, searching for blisters or even DBB

will provide some great help. Or feel free to email me personally

ruth_hiltz@... with more specific questions if you like.

Above all PERSEVERE. The DBB is critical to correction.

Keep going!

Hi Janet,

I'm SO sorry you are having trouble.. It's very stressful all around,

I know.

I have to say.. if a child's feet have been completely corrected, and

the brace has been set up right, most are able to be comfortable

almost right away in the brace. Your doctor should've had your baby

fitted for the shoes before the last cast went on. The brace

should've been available for as soon as it came off. You should've

had instruction in how to put it on. Any amount of time out of the

brace will allow for regression.

The usual set up for the brace is 70 degrees outward rotation for the

clubfoot, 45 for the normal foot if unilateral. The bar should be set

so the heels are about shoulder width apart. Any narrower and the

baby will be uncomfortable.

If a baby has persistent, awful problems with the brace, if the feet

won't stay in, if she/he cries inconsolably, around the clock, it's a

often a sign that the feet weren't corrected fully in the first

place, or the brace is set up wrong.

It's unfortunately seeming to become a common problem, now that more

doctors are trying to use the Ponseti method, but then seem to fail

parents in the brace phase.

Here is a link to a page with more info, and pictures, about the

brace, and tips on how to use and put on the brace. Look for the tab

that says, FAB or bracing. Scroll down to see pictures

http://pages.ivillage.com/ponseti_links/

If you have any doubts about your baby's feet and whether they are

completely corrected, I'd urge you to not keep trying to use the

brace, but immediately check into it , perhaps with another doctor.

We can give you leads if you need it.

I'm sorry if I'm assuming or imagining too much here, but wanted to

reply, since you seem to be having a rough time..

Best wishes, and let us know what happens,

and Claire

A short bar can make baby really uncomfortable. It is always better

that they be a bit too far apart than too close.

I find with Ben that if he is not sleeping well for a few nights it

is usually his bar. I set it apart half an inch (I have an adjustable

bar) and he is fine again.

Hope it works out for you guys.

First off they should NOT be reverse last shoes they should be straight last

shoes. That could be the problem right there. You have the wrong shoes. You

can put straight last shoes on either side of the bar and it doesn't matter

you CAN NOT do the same with reverse last.

Would you like to talk by phone??? It sounds like your doc has just thrown

you into this.

I have read in a couple of posts now that it doesn't matter if the

buckles are on the inside or outside of the straight last boots.

When I got my boots for Ben the orthotist told me that the buckles

should ALWAYS go on the inside.

This is because when you tighten the strap you are applying rotation

to the ankle and foot. Therefore you want to apply rotation in the

corrective direction, not apply torsion in the old clubfoot direction.

Don't know if it is significant or not. But it seems to make sense,

and frankly every little bit helps!!!

We also have always been told it doesn't matter. Hmmm.. But it

seems like if it were going to pull--it being on the inside would

pull the foot inward. Ours is on the outside, but not for any

reason.

Now I think about it...you're right..it would tend to rotate the foot

inward. Perhaps she meant the ankle. I'm not sure.

Well if it doesn't matter then either way is ok I guess.

Our buckle is on the outside. I tried both ways and found this to be
