My name is B and I am 7 plus years out from an open distal RNY. I drink 5 protein shakes a day. I vary my protein shakes from EAS, Proscore, Pure Whey Stack, Twin Labs, GNC, PB55, etc. I like the variety in the thicknesses, sweetnesses, etc. Although i know a lot of posties use the same brand all the time, I just choose not to. I started at 275, and am presently 152 lbs. I went through, and am still in recovery, from protein malabsorption (not getting enough cuz I didn't drink shakes - and became a " cracker queen " and didn't eat much) and became severely anemic. It's been a long road - over a year now, in recovery, and my labs are still not right yet. But, they are better than they were. Anyway, I would suggest you start your shopping by going to www.vitalady.com and ordering samples from . She is our resident " mom " and had the surgery done 8+ years ago and also so did her husband. She only carries things that she would eat/drink herself, so you know they are good. Of course, she doesn't drink anything but ProScore 100 or Pure Whey stack, and of course, chocolate, but she's biased. LOL GNC 100% whey stack is pretty good, I use that one in a pinch too, I like how it mixes, and not too sweet. Remember, a very good tip is to get in at LEAST 60 grams of protein per day via shakes. Because you will be bypassed, your tiny tummy won't be able to keep food in it long enough to break down those proteins from meats to do ya a lot of good. I learned the hard way, believe me... and it's NO FUN!!!!!!!!!! I strive for 150 grams a day, but I am a distal, which means more malabsorption for me. Welcome again to our group!!! Ask any questions and keep reading! B Distal RNY 12/27/95 275/

Guest guest
So, you're not alone, you at a Support Group meeting. I'm , my surgery was 10/5/94 ( & 1/20/2000) and I was 262, now 112, give or take, open RNY, very distal. Anyone else want to do the Support mtg intro? And starting here is a good place. ******** I have already gone through my first 'interviews' or appts and am scheduled for my first visit with the surgeon next month. At that time she will decide if she will do the surgery for me and I think we will get the date set. How hard is it to get insurance to authorize this> Is there anything I can do to get the insurance sompany going on this? ************* who's the doc, which surgery, which ins? Open or Lap?? to be or not to be I guess is that question. In speaking with the group that I have been with I ahve been told that the recovery/back to work time is not really different with either procedure.. amd I being 'snowed'??? ************* we all have our preferences. I was open, both times, my choice. Another question I have is that I have seen my dietician and my husband and I have been researching the protiens and shakes and carbs etc.. I have so many numbers kicking around in my head that I am lost!!! WHAT am I looking for in a shake, or protien bar or all of the above? ************** you don't care about bars, as they're not really protein for us. Maybe, maybe not. That's a gamble. In protein shakes, you want somethign that mixes with water, has appx 30g in a reasonable sized serving, and less than 6g sugar for that 30g protein I mean I know I am looking for lots of grams of protein, and that sugar is bad as well as carbs are bad...But how much is 'bad'? ************ sugar is bad. All around, unconditionally bad, inc " natural sugars " . Though you can sorta use a bit of fruit with moderation. I forgot the moderation and none of my jeans fit! Oops. Healthy carbs are NOT bad, except when the moderation thing falls out of the menu I was in GNC and the clerk recommended this shake mix called " Met-RX', but there were a lot of carbs in it...Can anyone give me an assist in this? ************** is it an MRP? Thank you so very much for listening to me ramble and for reading this whole thing. SOphia

So am I looking at carbs or sugar? The exact ready to drink shake they recommended for me is the " EAS AdvantEdge Carb conrol shake " 15g of protein, 5g of carbs, no sugar. But of course it is 4 servings per container of 11oz. Guest guest
Hi Sophia, Many surgeons are GREAT " cutters " however they lack the nutrition know-how. A lot of us have found that we feel better drinking protein shakes, whether our surgeons " approve " of them or not. We just cannot POSSIBLY get enough protein from food. Carnation Instant Breakfast, Ensure, Boost, Slim Fast will make us FAT and slow our weight loss down. The nutritionist may advocate skim milk is good source of protein, however, why drink sugar-based protein (check the labels on that milk) for about 9 grams, which could cause major lactose intolerance ( many of us are lactose intolerant after surgery), when the sugar will go to our hips? Protein shakes are great because they have little to zero sugar content, are pure protein which is readily used by our bodies for muscle growth, health, tissue repair, etc. Protein from meats sits in our pouches and goes " oooh awwww churnnnnn " and never does really break down into the branch chain amino acids that our bodies need. This is because we are bypassed and the part of our bodies that contributed in the past to breaking down those proteins is now " missing " or not in full use. Therefore, we need protein shakes as they are " predigested " and already broken down for us. Voilla! Instant protein absorption without the work!!! Hair, skin, nails, muscles, all are looking good. Of course, if you get a lack of protein, then it's gray ghost time :-) A tip for you, when you get your first pre op labs, ASK FOR COPIES of them and get a 3 ring notebook to keep track of them yourself. When you get your next labs ask for another copy and COMPARE them to your first labs. For instance, my preop protein level was 7.4, postop was 6.9, then continued to drop until I crashed at 5.8. Because I moved out of state, I wasn't getting regular labs cuz I hadn't been in touch with my surgeon who DID keep track of downward turns in my labs previously. He does encourage protein shakes - in fact, you have to sign an agreement that you will take them for life and all of your suppes... Ummmm.... I wasn't very compliant after the move and paid the price - 15 weeks off with no income, and sleeping, and IV iron 3 times a week, and IV vitamins, etc., etc., so weak. Sighhhhhhhhhhhh... Anyway, nuff about me. Some of the members on this list are actually just smiling and nodding to their docs when they ask about CIB or Boost, etc., but they NEVER drink that stuff (besides, they give BOOST to make elderly GAIN weight), and just drink their protein shakes... The choice is yours. I would suggest going to OSSG-PROTEIN (AT) YAHOOGROUPS (DOT) COM and signing up with them too. You can learn lots there. Ask any questions you like. Oh, and yeah, " mom " has a great schpeel on distal versus proximal and I bet if you asked real nicely she would send it to you. Distal means more malabsorption, more vitamins, more protein to stay healthy. Proximal means less malabsorption, less vites, sometimes recommendations of zero protein except from food. My advice, and your mileage may vary, is to go with your heart, and keep reading. You will find a wealth of information out there. I know I have. Take care, B

Guest guest
Hi Sophia and welcome to the group. Nice to have you with us. Insurance hassles have a lot to do with the particular company you are working with. Open versus Lap has been debated a lot. I had an open procedure and did just fine. Some Lap people swear that that is the only way to go. Not everyone qualifies for Lap because they are too big or have too much scar tissue from previous surgeries. For protein, I'd recommend going to www.vitalady.com and ordering some samples. , the site owner, is also called Mom here on this list because she takes such good care of us. So when someone refers to Mom that's who they're talking about. It's best to mix protein with just water and ice. Take care. I have read so much on all of the types of surgery, but very little on the diet and nutrition. I 'stumbled' across this group in my searches and it is the best thing that has happened!!! I am printing this out to show my husband as he is learning right along with me. (He is even trying all of the vitamins and drinks). I will look in on the other group too. Of course, if you get a lack of protein, then it's gray ghost time :-) > > A tip for you, when you get your first pre op labs, ASK FOR COPIES of them and get a 3 ring notebook to keep track of them yourself. I would suggest going to OSSG-PROTEIN@Y... and signing up with them too. > > Take care, > B

Guest guest
Hi I'm .... No wait, I'm Terry. My WLS was 9/26/00, revision to a distal/tummy tuck/hysterectomy 9/26/02. I've lost 175.5 pounds going from 339 to 163.5 - a very tight 32/34 to a size 10. Couldn't be happier! Well, I'm not thrilled with all the extra skin, but I'll take care of that. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
Thank you for your advice.. Do you know how I can 'light a fire' under my particular insurances hiney? I have been told that I qualify for both types of surgeries. My husband and I have discussed it and decided on the open. Thank you again Sophia > Hi Sophia and welcome to the group. Take care. > > Jeanne in WI > Age 39 > Open RNY - 5/21/02 > Dr. Chua > 5'7 " - 314/218/150-175 > > >
