did anyone have an infection after Breast Surgery

I just wanted to know if anyone had an infection after their surgery?

After my first surgery, whereby the margins were not clear and 7 of 21

lymph nodes were cancerous. The surgery site became infected, I had a

fever over 103 for three days and then on the forth day the incision

was reopened because it was pouring with infected fluid (and I do mean

pouring from my chest)

Once the incision was reopened the fever broke immediately, the body

aches were there for a few more days and I stopped throwing up. The

surgeon stated I didn't need to take the antibiotics I was given two

days earlier because my open incision would allow for any other fluids

to drain naturally..

The first surgery was back in September. I've had two other surgeries

to get clear margins... I'm to start my first rounds of Chemo next

week after all the blood work. I'm worried that the Doctor will again

postpone my Chemo because of the open incision even though I should

have started it two months ago. I quess this is because the chemo will

lower my immune system. My Radiation treatments won't start until

after the Chemo.

I'm also interesting in knowing where the people responding to all the

postings are living, as treatments are quite different here in Canada

as they are in the USA.

So again, did anyone have to wait for their Chemo because of an

infection or open wound?

Thank you nne, for both your replies and your prayers....

I have a great support team, both family, friends and my home nursing team...

And I feel blessed that my Care nurse in the Oncology clinic, which I'm sure

I'll get to know very well, also went through Chemo back in June. So I'll

definately feel as though I'm able to trust her!!!

Yeah the set backs have been one after the other and I haven't yet started

Chemo, which I feel will be the hard part... three surgeries, a very large open

incision... which is being packed with this new seaweed type ribbon.. named

acquacel....

I first was diagnoised with Invasive Ductal Cars. The mass was almost 3

centimeters, is Stage 3, negative for hormon therapy but Positive for Her2, 7 of

21 lymph nodes are cancerous.... so it's really important for the Chemo to be

started ... I'm hoping they start the Chemo and are able to control the

healing or damage it may cause to the incision...

My home nurse feels it could another 4 to 6 months to heal, as the hole inside

the breast is very deep.

So here I sit until tuesday next week to see what is going to happen next.

It's a waiting game for me.... I haven't been back to work since September and

I'm so bored!!!

I think if it were me I would go for a second opinion. I would want something

done to those other masses also. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Kassy, thank you for replying.

I know what you mean... I went back to my surgeon a week after the surgery

stating that it was quite sore and more swollen, which he shrugged off and

said.. yeah that can happen...

Then a week later, twice he said... come back and see me in another week... so

three weeks later and it's so swollen and pouring with beige coloured fluid...

he says...

SO when did you start noticing this....aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I told him.. I've been telling you this for the last 3 weeks, I guess the 103+

fever woke them up ... oh and the right breast that was pouring with

infection...

He's lucky he is so gorgeous or I wouldn't allow him to keep operating.

I'm still worried though, as I've asked my family doctor, my surgeon and my

Oncologist .. why aren't we doing biopsies on the two massing that are showing

up in the left breast which have been there for two years and were marked by the

pathologist to be the same types of masses and the one that went wild in my

right breast.. and all three are saying... because the masses are the same

size.... apparently they'll wait until it explodes light the mass on the right

size which grew 850% in two months...

I don't trust Doctor's so much any more...

I think putting my faith in prayers is a safer bet.
