(nice name BTW!),

That's great that you have cancelled the surgery.

For future phone calls, Dr Ponseti is normally in his office on

Mon/Wed/Fri. His email responses usually take at least a few days, via

his secretary Joyce Roller. She is also very nice, has worked for Dr P

for year and she can also help if he isn't in (I have a feeling she's

also only there on Mon/Wed/Fri).

Good luck!

Update on Us

I'm the one who joined this week, my son was supposed to have surgery

tomorrow. Thanks to this group I cancelled the surgery and made an

appointment with Dr. Mack at Shriner's Hospital in Springfield, MA.

The appointment's not until late Sept. I hope that's not too late.

Dr. Mack is listed on Dr. Ponseti's website as a qualified Ponseti

doctor. Has anyone in this group seen him? What did you think of him?

After waiting almost two days for an e-mail response from Dr. Ponseti

I called his office today. I guess he won't be in until tomorrow and

she said she'd have him call me. I'll be curious to see what he has

to say.

I think you've made a great decision, in cancelling the surgery. I have a

feeling Dr. P will tell you to come straight to Iowa but we'll have to wait

and see. Please keep us posted. Sorry I have never heard of that doctor.

There haven't been too many families here who have posted about

seeing Dr. Mack. I think I saw a referral for him on the database

when I was in there this morning though. When Dr. Ponseti calls you

tomorrow, he may or may not recommend seeing Dr. Mack. The reason

that I would be concerned is that your son is " older " and in the

interest of time, you'll want to see a doctor who is not

only " qualified " but very " experienced " ...especially in

treating " older clubfeet " .

Were you able to talk to someone who works directly with Dr. Mack

(his assistant or nurse) when scheduling your appointment? They

might be able to get you in sooner than late September. I would

recommend that you try calling the Shriner's (or hunt him down an

another hospital if Dr. Mack works at multiple clinics/offices) and

asking if you could talk to the doctor or his assistant about your

son's case ahead of time, interview them on their use of the method,

their successes in treating newborns as well as older infants...you

should be able to talk to them ahead of time and not have to wait

until your appointment to discuss your son's treatment and if you

should be going there or elsewhere. (use the parent checklist on the

http://pages.ivillage.com/ponseti_links to help you formulate some

questions)

I'm so very glad that you found our board! Keep us posted on your

conversation with Dr. P and what you decide to do. Good luck!!!!!

Call Shriner's back and ask to talk to this Dr's care coordinator. She/he

should have information that indicates CF babies don't wait for

appointments. Especially an older baby. Now I'm wondering if this doc has

the experience necessary to treat your son properly. Not all Ponseti Dr's

have the skills to take on older babies. The appointment should be for

tomorrow or Tuesday next week. When we called Shriners the care

coordinator got us in the next morning. Of course there's a possibility

the care coordinator isn't as familiar with the protocol yet, they may

still be new at this (another something to be cautious about though) but

the Dr. will make sure you get in. I would call back and push this. At

the very least you will get the initial consultation if Dr. P. tells you

that you should see a different Dr. I'm sure Dr. P. will tell you the best

course of action, and if Joyce says she'll have him call you... he

will. It's a holiday weekend so don't worry if you don't hear from

him. He might have something planned personally if he's not coming in on

Friday which as far as I've heard is one of the normal work days for him.

I know all this is crazy , but it'll work out. Be glad your little

man isn't being cut open tomorrow. At minimum, you get to spend more time

with him happy and pain free right now. Each time I think of you I am so

happy that you came here and were willing to accept that there's a better

option. I know your son will thank you for it. Talk about in the nick of

time!

I noted the Swenson family's referral to Dr. Mack on the database and

looked through the Dec. 2002/ Jan. 2003 posts for their story. Their

daughter started seeing Dr. Mack at 8 months old (referred by Dr. P

at the time) and she had had a prior tenotomy. The last post I saw

was that she had had 4 casts w/ Dr. Mack, but he was concerned about

the scar tissue from prior treatment and completing another

tenotomy. Hopefully you can email them and they'll get back to you

to tell you how treatment worked out for their daughter.

Best wishes-

THanks for the excellent advice. I'll ask Dr. Ponseti all of these

questions when he calls tomorrow. Then I'll call and see if I can ask

these questions of Dr. Mack. If I have to go to Iowa I'm willing to

go. I tried e-mailing the person who recommended Dr. Mack, but it

came back.

I'm not sure who the person was who made the appointment. She may not

know that I need an earlier appointment. I'll try getting an earlier

appointment. It's hard to get the person who makes appointments on

the phone.

I did e-mail them, but it came back. It sounds like he does work with

older babies. That's good to know.

If that's what she said, I'm sure he'll call. Dr. P. is very good

about getting right back to parents. Sometimes emails aren't answered

right away because his secretary is the one who checks his email, not

him, and she's not there every day. (He dictates email responses to

her.) And he's not there every day either. Of course he will talk to

you about the doctor you mentioned. I can't recall hearing much about

him. I also would want to get in earlier than the end of the month.

Have you gotten to the point of exploring the possibilty of going to

Iowa (I know it's hard to fathom at first.. but it CAN be done, even

having other children..) or to the docs in New York City, or Dr.

Herzenberg in Baltimore? I wonder if it would be a possibilty for you

to go to this symposium they are having in Baltimore that others have

mentioned? There will be quite a gathering of prominent Ponseti

method doctors.. maybe they would welcome the chance to have an older

child, as yet uncorrected, as part of it.. just a thought..

This is all just from my gut feeling .. for your situation of a child

of 9 months.

Please keep us informed, and tell us what you hear from Dr. P

tomorrow. Hang in there.. you're doing a great job..

Best,

and Claire
